Hoodia gordonii is a cactus that is native to certain parts of Southern Africa. It's boasted to have appetite-suppressant effects. There are a few issues to keep in mind when considering dumping your money on these "miracle pills":
1. There is an active molecule called P57, found in only a small percentage of the cacti, that actually acts as the suppressant.
2. The test to determine whether or not P57 is present is supposedly costly; my money's on the fact that "big biz" isn't going to invest for our best interest.
3. Over-the-counter diet pills are NOT regulated by the FDA, so there is no way of knowing exactly what's in those pills. In other words, it could be hoodia, but the useless parts.
4. Hoodia is a protected plant species, so only so much of it is allowed for outside (non-African) harvesting. Again, there's no way of knowing what's exactly in the pills.
