The best way to treat stiff muscles is magnesium. Magnesium relaxes the muscles caused by too much calcium. In muscle activity, calcium contracts the muscle and magnesium relaxes it. When a person takes too much calcium thru milk and calcium supplements, more calcium get inside muscle tissues and cause muscle spasms, tics, twitches, cramps, etc. Unless more magnesium replaces calcium, calcium will remain in themuscle tissue and causes the stiff pains. No drugs, massage or rubs will relax that muscle adequately.
For immediate and prolonged muscle relaxation, give ur wife 350 mg magnesium chloride daily divide3d into 2-3 doses together with 2-3 quarts of water spread throughout the day. Nuts, seeds, green leafy veggies are good sources of magnesium too.
Try it! I have proven it several times and it works great!!! No side effects to worry abt because its natural.

Go herbal. There is an herb called Arnica that is used for muscle aches. You can find it at your local Mexican market in the dried herb section or possibly any natural health store.
Boil a bunch of it, let it cool off , then soak a hand towel in it and put it over her shoulders. Do this several times until she starts to feel a bit better. There are also good Chinese ointments that smell a little like bengay that work wonders. I have a bottle I can't read, because it's in Chinese and I love it. If she can stand a light massage, she should really get one. When my back was stiff, I got a Shiatsu/Thai massage every week for about five weeks, until the stiffness was gone. It could get costly, but it is so worth it.
Definitely invest in the right pillow.

First she should sleep on her back with a good pillow designed specifically for back sleepers. You're better brands in department stores label for either side or back sleepers. If you can't replace her pillow right now roll up a hand towel and put it under her neck (no pillow) and voila you have a homemade cervical spine roll. Have her soak in a warm bath with epsom salts. You can consult a chiropractor - since insurance companies rarely pay for chiropractics anyway they usually will work with people on a sliding scale or reasonable payment plan. She could benefit from deep tissue massage and adjustments before it gets any worse. Also have her do some deep breathing to relax - stress and clenching teeth are common culprits that cause neck pain. Good luck.

When she sleep on side way, if pillow too high the neck will stiff, if pillow too thin shoulder will stiff. If she use computer at work it might be because the chair is too low and the neck and shoulder muscles work too hard too bring up her arm make it stiff. If she have too much stress it will happen too. Go get a massage or you can massage her neck and shoulder. This is the most easiest problem for a massage therapist.

I find heat helps more with muscle stiffness.
Magnesium is a good suggestion. Epsom salts contain magnesium and it can be absorbed through the skin, so try a nice bath with epsom salts . Follow the directions on the container.
I like solid foam pillows.(not memory foam) They are kind of hard to find and more expensive that the type most people use but they are very comforting. I found my last one at Walmart. I also watch for pillow sales , to get them on reduction.
I also like an analgesic rub called theragesic. It helps alot if you can rub her shoulders and neck with it before bed.

Try a different firmness pillow. Freeze water in a dixie cup (then tear down the top of the cup--like a popsicle) and give her an ice massage; then heat a wet washcloth in a microwave (don't burn her!) and wrap around her neck/shoulders. Take a motrin and run on some Tiger Balm just at bedtime.

That happens to me when i sleep with my on my back with my arms above my head, also if you do not have support under your neck it will hurt. Then stress causes pain there too. I use Movelat cream, works well , i don't know if it is on Prescription only i was given a free sample by a rep, How about a brufen or two, that also helps just remember if using brufen you cannot use Movelat cream i think it has very similar ingredients. Wish you well , i know it is painful. Take care.:))

Could be the bed or the pillow at walmart for 100$ you could get a microfiber memory foam mattress bed topper one of those space age things should help instead of paying thousands for a new mattress of the same quality it will not work if your mattress has dips all throughout it and try to get a similar pillow preferribly one that is flat just typical cotton and thin might work for her. Shoulder rub of course!!! It could also be stress induced so talk to her and treat her good and give her a rubbin :D Hot baths followed by a run is great too relaxes muscles and work them out from there on. If you donno how to give a rub research it :)

You can also try a heating pad. This is what I do for whenever I have sore muscles such as when I have pulled them. Also, you mentioned that you have no insurance so if this gets worse check with your city's health dept to find out if they offer a free clinic. If not check to see if there is a Medical School close by that may be able to help evaluate this problem further.
