At the end of the day, all we do is of little consquence when we live in a cosmic shooting gallery (and if you can attribute this unfriendly environment to an intelligent being, then that being is the embodiment of evil).

Okay..... Do you need a Willie Wonka universe in order to prove the existence of god then? I mean, a land of wonder and complete chocolatey goodness, devoid of any "bad" stuff? C.S. Lewis and, well, philosophers for some time have been discussing issues such as "the problem of pain," addressing issues such has the one you are detailing. I can't do service to their ideas, but I believe one basic idea is that god puts us into a field of play, so to speak, that includes lots of bad things, because: 1. we have free will to then chose whether to believe in him or not (i.e. he could make a universe free from "bad stuff" and let us know he exists, but then where would be our free will? Anyway, check out some of this stuff.

I find the universe itself to be one of the biggest cases against the God of the Old Testament. It proves that men wrote it. The bible is so petty and small once you (try) to understand the size and beauty of the universe.

I concur. If god exists, he'd be malevolent.
