Christians take one of two tacks answering this question, it seems to me: either monster-under-the-bed vagueness or inexplicable precision. Maybe it's torture, maybe it's just distance from God, maybe it's death. Who cares; if it's real, God is unjust and not worth worshipping. If it's fake, which seems astoundingly more likely, it's just an instrument of social control; a product of men's minds, meant to enslave people in this life, never mind any subsequent ones.
