Depends on your rank -- sometimes depends on your MOS (Grunts tend to stay together) if you have a spouse or rank of NCO you are allowed off base houseing. The final decission is up to the Platoon leader.

It depends.
First, everyone generally has barracks housing available.
If there are base family quarters available, these are made available to soldiers with families. If there is a shortage, it will be more or less by rank. (sometimes senior NCO's go before junior Officers).
If there's no base housing and your family is brought to the station, you might get an allowance to pay for civilian housing.
However, some duty stations don't actually want your family there, so there is no base housing, and no allowance for quarters.
What you want to do is ask your First Sergeant at your duty station, who will probably send you to Personnel to talk about it.

After boot camp you go home for 10 days. Then you return for ITB or MCT... you live in barracks while doing that. Then you go to whatever school is required by your MOS. If you have an Aviation Electronics MOS, you'll probably go to Pensacola and live in the barracks there... but it's more like an apartment building... room for 2-3 guys in a room, with bathroom and limited kitchen facilities. Once you're assigned to your PDS (Permanent Duty Station) you'll live wherever unmarried enlisted men live.. probably in an apartment-house type barracks... 2-3 guys to a room. If you're married, it depends on what base is your PDS... and what housing they have available. I THINK it's mostly officers who are offered on-base married housing... Many married Marines live off-base and get housing allowance to offset the expense.
I hope that answers your question!!

living on base is the barracks, you live in the barracks on base, not the ones you trained in in Boot camp, but at your new permenant base, if your single you live free in the Barracks, if married you live mostly in off base housing unti lthe rank of E-4 (rank has it's privileges), and not all but some MOs allow you to live off base if ;you wish, and they will pay you some BAQ and BAS (housing and food allowance) which pays several hundred towards rent and food, since you don't live in the barracks you no longer get a free meal card at the chow hall. either.

Normally you can live in barracks if your single, and if your married you live off base until you reach a certain rank level, or your name is on a waiting list and eventually you get lucky enough to move on base. My ex was in the Army, we were stationed at Scholfield in Hawaii and we lived off base the 3yrs we were there. It takes awhile.

after boot camp and you are married and need a house for your family you will be given base housing in quarters fitting your rank, or if you want to you can live off base, your choice.
most guys prefer to live in the barracks to keep their cost down, again it is your choice.

Yes...unless you are an officer, you will live in a barracks with other Marines. Your MOS doesn't make any difference.
That's the military......
