The fact that someone didn't teach their children good manners shouldn't have a baring on whether other people nurse their children until their bodies don't need breastmilk anymore. Just because a child can survive without breastmilk doesn't mean its good for them to go without. Outside of the US, weaning as early as 6 months or a year is just nuts. Only Americans want to be rid of their children so badly they won't even nurse them...sheesh.

As for the actual question, at 3 most children can talk. They often develop a cute nickname or code word for nursing. It's a sweet bit of bonding for mom and child, and also allows mom to be discrete in company. If there is some kind of language barrier, they ask to nurse by whatever means of communication they've been using previously. Babies communicate from birth. After 3 years, Mom should have a fair idea of what the child wants. ;)

By 3, a child very well knows how to ask for something then wait a few minutes to receive it. I've attached an article about the pros and cons of nursing a child until they're actually developmentally ready to wean. Within it you'll find links to public, peer-reviewed, widely respected research on child development...as well as further information about several aspects of the topic.

well I guess you and I are the only ones who breast feed toddlers. my son is 4 yr old and he still nurses at night. when he wants to nurse he tells me or he'll ask if he can have the boba. as long as you are still comfartable with breast feeding it is all good.

I would think a toddler would be a little old for breastfeeding. Time for a sippy cup to help with their independence..

around six months, you really don't have to breast feed your toddler any more, you shouldstart feeding your child baby food, or at least let your child try to feed him/herself formula from the bottle but provide help if needed, this creates independence..... but all families raise their children differently.... yeah thats not normal for a three year old!

A woman once told me that she wondered how long to breastfeed her children until she was at a family gathering where a five-year-old walked up to his mother and said, "Mom! Dits!" The woman pulled her blouse aside and the five-year-old stood there nursing. The woman I was talking to said she decided, "Not that long!"

I know a woman who breastfed her kids until they were 3. They simply lifted her shirt, regardless of where she was! I have witnessed several embarrassing episodes in stores or restaurants where a kid would try to flash her to the world.

i imagine it is truly no longer our organization. A mom who does it is doing good through her baby. it is in assessment to she is poisoning her baby. I breastfed my daughter till she became 19 months... in reality till she give up. In my recommendations, i wanted her to give up through 2 - yet when she had lengthy gone longer, i'd have kept nursing her.

well, since most toddlers are not breastfed anymore, I guess your question is kinda irrelevant! Maybe give some more info!
