I find it utterly amazing the lack of information about China that is preached here as gospel.
How many of you know that this year China has adopted the most strict Euro car pollution standards?
Or that they are well aware of the massive pollution that they are producing and has made it a top priority to slow it down?
Of that environment and the problems are daily fare on the news? Or that the children are exposed to environmental concerns in school, that every child knows of the problems?
Or that there are vast area's of China that are not polluted?
That most of this has only started 5 years ago, and the lions share of that 3 years ago and that it is going to take a hell of a lot more then the west demanding instant fixes. That when the west decided that the environment was extremely important was 40 years ago and it took us this long just to get where we are and yet the USA is still the largest producer of green house emissions?
Or that the life expectancy of the Chinese are only a few years less then ours --- so where are the massive amount of people that are dying from pollution? If you say there are a few pockets where people are exposed to pollution on a much large scale, then you'd be correct.......the country as a whole, no way on earth is that happening to the degree the west believes. I know, I live here in a pretty pollution free environment in the middle of China.
This is nothing more then more China bashing with India being a close second.
Time to take off the blinders people and get our house in order before we tell others how to live in theirs.
Signed, an ex pat from the USA living in the center of China.
Peace
Jim

India has ample rainfall and its water problems are mostly related to improper water management. China is a huge country with almost dictatorial regime so they would just consider the people who die as collateral damage and move ahead. There isnt any worthy opposition to the regime in China.
The long term affects of pollution on the living population could be far more devastating and will only be seen after 50-60 years, thats when the real picture will emerge.

To answer ur questions one by one, yes u r very much right in saying these two countries as emerging giants
1) Will the lack of clean water inhibits their growth?
Yes, definately this issue will play its role. As in south asia, Diarhoea is the single major contributor in mortaltiy of 1-5 years old children. One more thing is that, water pollution problem (biological contmaination) that we have earlier can easily be treated thorugh easy methods like bioling but now treatment for chemical contamination is quite expensive and almost impossible to be provided at such a large scale.
2) China and India not only creates problem for themselves but also for others. Scientific studies carried out in Pakistan shows that pollution genearated for thermal power plants in India transported to Paksitan and results in increasing winter fog episodes in Pakistan causing accidents, low agricultural productivty and many other problems.
3) Access to fresh water is a basic need and important factor to very survival. Increasing awarness in this people without this facility will compel government to put more resources in this sector.
Another major factor in limiting population will be the resource competition which is natural as u can see in case of many other species in an ecosystem.
Increasing population together with less or unjust resource distribution increases the conflicts.

Yes, without a doubt it will, just as access to fresh water facilitates the growth of a developing nation. And you don't have to be a human to figure that one out - check out the social stratification of animal life around a watering hole.
Water will be among the many resources which will not likely keep pace with the growing populations of these countries. My hope is that as the quality of life increases among the societies, the desire to maintain this quality of life or improve it for subsequent generations will become a major factor in limiting family size.

Energy will be the number one problem facing these emerging economies.
http://www.cfr.org/publication/12200/indias_energy_crunch.html
As it is they are having a hard time meeting their current needs, and with growing economies, their projected needs are even more.
International global warming laws and carbon restrictions will prevent real economic developement in India. China has some flexability due to carbon credits and ability to circumvent international policies.
The good news for India and China is that even though economic growth will be slowed down to a halt in these countries, economic growth will also be heavely dampend in developed nations like the USA. So there might not be anything to catch up to if all goes well in the global warming dreams of policy makers.

Definitely it will hold them back. People and the natural resources are also among a nation's valuable assets and therefore it is a vital factor for a country's economic growth. Neglecting the people's needs same with the environment will really mean harm to the targeted progress.
The path for growth should not be a one way street. We also have to look what needs to be done to ensure these valuable resources are replenished everytime they are utilized.

If that's true, India is in bigger trouble than CHina. China controls A large part of Indias water supply. China is thinking of diverting the water nort and east, to fuel it's demand of water.

Obviously not. It hasn't affected their civilizations for well over 5000 years. You didn't mention the thousands of Americans who die every year due to pollution and air quality either. Or the thousands of people who were left to fend for themselves after Hurricane Katrina.
India and China both have larger populations than the US, China has a standing army larger than the US and both have nuclear weapons. The US is scared of waking those sleeping giants, that's why they are in Iraq looking for an Arab who was last seen in Afghanistan.

They will overcome those problems, just like we did. But they will have to go through that stinking river, smoggy air polluting phase, just like we did, before they get rich enough to be able to afford the expense of cleaning up their act and fed up enough with the mess to actually spend the money.
