4 megapixels will give you a really good picture. People have more than 5 but it's just overkill. Thats only if your making huge posters and printing out like table size pictures or doing professional image editing. You can get a really good 4 MP nikon for under $150.

The number of pixels defines the resolution of the picture and the amount of detail the camera can pick up. For snap shots up to 5x7 three to four megapixels will do for larger blowups you will need five to seven. Professional grade photos might even have eight to eleven or more. Price and quality should be more of a concern in todays world since the pixels are really over the top. My advice would be to buy the best you can afford and move up when you have a better feel for what you want to accomplish.
Don't forget to look at optical zoom capability. Digital cameras with tiny lenses will not be nearly as satisfying as one with more light gathering size.

Even though I personally own this ultra compact camera, I would still like to highly recommend the purchase of a Nikon Coolpix L10 for the following reasons:

1. Besides taking well-exposed hi-quality 5 megapixel pictures, it uses a standard set of rechargeable double AA batteries which last a very long time;
2. Has a 3x optical zoom;
3. The flash setting for "red-eye" correction is on the navigator wheel and not within a submenu;
4. It's very small and light;
5. Uses inexpensive SD memory cards;
6. The digital video feature takes wonderful "sound" videos which are noise free. It records the piano very well with it's built-in microphone;
7. It comes with a USB 2.0 transfer cable which you connect to your USB computer port;
8. Has tripod mount on bottom of camera;
9. And the price is a mere $99 [sold at Samy's Camera - www.samys.com, and Staples.com.]

Review(s) can be found at www.amazon.com [Query: "Nikon Coolpix L10" along with pictures provided by satisfied purchasers.]

Good luck!

Actually. a 4 to 6mp sensor is best for compact digital cameras.
Compact digital cameras have very small sized sensors, and cramming more pixels into a small space actually HURTS the photo. You lose color depth and clarity with more pixels!!!

This is why dSLR's can take better pictures, they have a much larger sensor. Even still, a lot of dSLR's are still in the 6mp to 10mp range.

Find yourself a camera with the features you want in the 4 to 6 mp range, and you'll be happy. I like the colors the Fuji 6mp F31fd takes, and it has facial recognition too (and has a larger 1/1.7" sensor which is a benefit). You should be able to find it at a great price around $200. Here's a reputable site: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=search&ci=1&kw=FUFPF31FD&shs=FUFPF31FD*&Q=&O=, and I like Amazon too.

Many other brands are good to, don't get me wrong. Check the www.dpreview.com site to search on the features you want. They give honest unbiased reviews that really help you find the right camera. You can even compare 2 cameras side by side.

I think the best cameras for the price are the Casio EX-Z75 series. For $170, you get a 7.2 megapixel, 3x optical, 2.6" LCD and only 4.3oz. They also come in cool colors like blue, pink, red, black.

Anything higher than 8 megapixels is an overkill for most people.

the only point of having a lot of megapixels is if you are goin to make your pictures the size of your whole door or if you like to crop them a lot. A lot of the newer camers are goin to be 6-7 megapixels. that is a lot for anyone considering some slr's come in 6 megapixels. 4 megapixels is good if you dont crop a lot and if you print small pictures- 4x6, 5x7. Good luck.

My 1 1/2 year old Kodak EasyShare has only 4 and I'm happy as hell with it.
