If you dealt with domestics, being spat on, worked long hours for little pay, had your job affected by BS politics, had your cruiser urinated in, filled out tons of paperwork that got shredded later, worked through your lunch break four out of five shifts, and got your decisions second guessed by people with absolutely no clue or training, you can call yourself a former cop. LOL

Call yourself a "former cop" if you want. The word "cop" of course is just a slang term with no legal definition. You would have a more difficult time calling yourself a "former police officer" or "former peace officer" because each has a legal definition attributed to it, depending on the jurisdiction. If your boss still insists you are not a "former cop" then let him/her live in ignorance.

I would just say that I am former military. Though it is very similar, I don't believe it's the same. Did you ever aim your weapon at a civilian? Did you ever investigate the scene of murder? Did you ever bust a drug ring? Did you wear a bullet proof vest? Was your weapon loaded?
I dated a MP and I don't believe his weapon was loaded. I think just holding an M16 is intimidating enough. I don't believe he ever fired his weapon, nor pointed it at anyone.
I'm not even sure he trained the same as a police officer.
A very important job but not the same. Be proud of your service to your country and emphasize the military aspect. That's the most important part anyway. Your service to your country as a volunteer serviceman and all that it entails is more honored anyway.
At least I think so. Thank you!!!

I served in the US Army Military Police and thought I was a "cop". Then I got out of the military and got a job as a deputy. After 19 weeks in the academy and over 5 years on the road I realized that I was sadly mistaken in my Military days.

I think it sounds more accurate and sexier to say you were a former military police officer.

Did you have a badge? Did you carry a sidearm? Did you have the power to apprehend, question, detain, and search?
I think you did. That's about as "cop" as it gets.
