That is not a fair question. You can not compare the US that makes over 50% of the worlds goods, to say Argentina, which makes .5 percent, of the goods used in the world. Also most of the comparisons that compare us to China do so on an unfair basis by not taking in account that 300 million and 1.6 billion is not a fair comparison. When you compare, TOTAL output, things come much more in line. In addition keep in mind, most are so one sided that all that think about are our cars and coal burning power plant. Most do not know that RICE production is quickly becoming one of the single largest causes of methane, one of the main green house gases. The decomposing foliage in rice paddies produces huge quantities of methane. Now ask you self this, what countries produces the most rice? then we get on sacred ground. My point, don't believe all you read, it is so biased against the American economy that it is comical,

We are! The United States of America!

On a per-capita basis: The United States.
On a national basis: United States, but China is catching up.

Another factor is "what" and the answer is Carbon, in coal and oil. Not until we, and the world, stop using both, completely stop, totally ban, down to nothing, will we able to compute the maximum temperature the globe will reach.
And, the day in which gasoline sales will be banned is not even included in political jokes or sound-bytes -but it will.

It doesnt matter. The top contributers will always be the human race. And it cant all be blamed on just a few countries either.
We are all, collectively, responsable.

Is there any one simple answer to this question ?

Could it be a combination of things like deforrestation , greenhouse gas emissions , industrial pollution ?

The U.S is #1 as a country. The U.S. is not the worst on a per person basis, but all the countries with worse per person rates (such as Australia) have small populations and so are not a major concern.

China is #2 as a country, and will become #1 in a year or so if present trends continue.

However, China has a far lower per person contribution than the U.S. and it is only their much larger population that makes them #2 as a country.

By country, the US is by far the greatest contributor, accounting for nearly 25% of global CO2 emissions

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_dioxide_emissions_by_country

On a per capita basis, the US is the worst major country, but there are 10 island nations (some US territories) and Middle East countries who are worse.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions_per_capita

Breaking it down by human sources, one of the worst contributors in the US is transportation (27.2%) and specifically cars (21.6%).

Worldwide, deforestation is the biggest culprit (18.3%), followed by cars (9.9%) and powering residential buildings (9.9%).

here's my take. No country should be singled out, only idividuals and countries. We are a global community and while it is true that US, Britian, Australia and some Arab countries have the highest per capita pollution, nobody is off the hook. Everybody everywhere has to look at his or her own contribution to global warming and take steps to fix the problem...NOW!
