The theory is that the "spirit and soul" are the product of electro-chemical activity in the brain. When the brain ceases to function, all that we know and remember and feel and think ceases along with it. The energy is transformed into matter through the process of decomposition.

Newton was good at classical mechanics, but he was 200 years before we really knew all that much about energy. There has never been any evidence for a soul or any energy that doesn't dispate in the form of heat when you die.

Consciousness and what we percieve as matter are both dependent upon each other for existence just as male can not exist without female and day without night. I believe that consciousness transcends our memory and everything therein dies with our brain. The first-person perspective never leaves no matter what state we are in but memory at times can be random. I believe it's like a dream, in which memory may or may not recall our life. Nothing that we learn, experience, believe, or percieve in this world could follow us but a state of mind can bring peace over our consciousness and therefore we are respnsible for creating our own heaven or hell for lack of better terms. Some consciousness may also attach itself and long after the material world too much which could also exist as a form of hell.
Science and spirituallity have merged in a field of study known as quantum mechanics, which has lead to discoveries that can not be described in man's own words. Quantum theory reveals a relationship between consciousness and the percieved material world, which happens to coincide with Eastern philosophies about reality.
I do not believe that we are merely a complex system of chemical and electrical impulses as many scientists would have us believing. That is the materialistic or naturalistic view. But I also do not believe that indoctrinated ideology based on human conceptualization, can even fathom true existence as theologians and religious affiliates would like us to believe.

This question is flawed. Atheists do not believe they have a spirit and soul in the first place which defeats the purpose of this question. The energy in their body would first dissipate until they were the same temperature as their surrounding and then bacteria would eat them and turn that into energy.

I don't believe I have a soul. When I die that is the end of the line. I cease to exist.

Since the brain is the generator of all your energy and the "spirit" and "soul" are man-made inventions, when your brain shuts down; that's it. Your body decomposes and you cease to exist.

Whatever you think 'energy' is, you seem to be wrong.
There are no such things as 'spirits' or 'souls'. The4re's just you and your meat, and the electrochemical patterns in your head that make up your mind.
When your body dies, so does your mind - and that's the end of you.
