There are 7 steps on the "Road to a Sale". The most important being the first step which is "First Impression". This is the customers perspective of how you appear to him before you even open up your mouth. Wether your shirt is untucked or perhaps a cigarette hanging out of your mouth, we have to remember that everything we do effects how the customer perceives us. We certainly don't want the customer to start his buying experience on negative ground, therefore we must be always mindful of how we appear to a customer. With that in mind, it makes it that much easier to "break the ice". Treat them how you would want to be treated. befriend them. I've always said its much easier to sell to your friends. Also don't forget to follow the steps to "the road to a sale". 1.)First impression 2.)meet and greet 3.)build rapport 4.)Investigate 5.)presentation 6.)demonstration 7.) negotiating
Good luck and good selling!

If you like to read, I recommend the book "How to Sell ANYTHING to ANYBODY" by Joe Girard. He is known as the "World's Greatest Salesman" according to the Guinness Book of World Records and is also known for selling the most cars from the same car dealership in Michigan for over 15 years. He knows all the tips and strategies, and would really give you the insider edge. I wish you the best :-)
Oh- BTW he teaches honesty and treating the customer as you would want to be treated- nothing slimy.

Watch their body language. If you are astute, and recognize the difference between a shopper and a buyer, you need do nothing other than ask a few question about what they are looking for. The most successful salespeople I have known are the ones who let the shopper become the buyer by just a few steps to moving them toward what they want. If they weren't wanting, they wouldn't be there.

YOU: "Hi, welcome to ABC Motors. My name is Michael, what can I get you some information on?"
Or, if someone is just walking around and you go up him and he is rather gruff or snotty with you just say, "I saw you walking around and I didnt want you to think you were being ignored. If I can help answer any qustions for you please ask for me, I'm Michael".
Both ways are a good way to let your up know not to feel pressure.
Remember, you have one chance to make a first impression, so make your count. Keep it in this perspective, every person you talk to is worth something to you.
