Quick and cheap way is to spray some carburetor cleaner into the carb while the truck is running.b Use the whole can and do not spray in so much at one time that the truck stalls. Keep it running.
The correct way is to remove and disassemble the carburetor, soak in parts cleaner, put back together with new gaskets from a carburetor rebuild kit, reinstall and adjust the carb.
Better for you is to install a rebuilt carburetor and turn in the old one.

Thre's not much you can do as a "quick fix" when it comes to cleaning a carb.

If you haven't ever rebuilt a carb, I would suggest removing it and taking it to a repair shop or buying a rebuilt carb, as rebuilding a carb is a pain.

If you want to do it yourself, go to the auto parts store - buy the Haynes Repair Manual (or similar) and a "rebuild kit" - most come with minimal instructions. You may want to replace the jets. You will need solvent/carb cleaner, a 4 quart pan and an air compressor in addition to other tools.

Simple instructions: Disassemble - note the float position and number of turns to remove jets. Soak the components overnight in solvent. Use an old toothbrush to clean the crud. Blow out all the cavities and jets. Be sure jets are clean. Adjust float and screw in jets same number of turns used to take them out. Replace gaskets/jets/etc. Reassemble.

Mount carb on intake manifold and reconnect. You may have to adjust jets to get it to start. Once started, adjust idle and let it warm up. Check exaust for "Gas smell" - too rich.

Wayyy oversimplified - it's a real pain, but you get the idea.

The 1984 302 only came with a Motorcraft 2 barrel carb. Those are like the easiest carbs to rebuild in the world, short of maybe a lawnmower. Pull it off, tear it apart, and soak it in carb cleaner. Blow out all the passages with compressed air, and re-assemble. The float is adjusted to the "level" position, and the mixture screws in snug and back out 1-1/2 turns. Once it's running, adjust the screws for the highest possible idle, then in 1/4 turn on each. Then adj the idle screw if need be for the correct idle rpm. Usually about 800-900 rpm in park.

Since you said that there is crud on it. I assume you are talking about the outside of the carb. Just go to an auto parts store and buy a can of carb cleaner and spray it on while the engine is cool. Other than that, just take it somewhere and have it serviced by a repair shop. Good luck.

you need to get a rebuild kit, it comes with a exploded view of all the parts, then once apart, soak it in carb cleaner overnight
