Do not sign her up for a gym. That's a silly idea for a 12 year old and a silly waste of £30 which could be spent better on eating good, healthy food.

At that age there are three things that you need to do if you want to change her situation:

1. Get outside more. Sitting on the sofa watching TV is not healthy. Just being outside means you're more likely to do something energetic. Go to the park a couple of times a week or something. If you have a dog, let her take it for walkies or something. Its all good exercise and the fresh air really will do a lot of good (unless you live in polluted central London!).

2. Diet. Make sure every evening meal has a good portion of veg. You can't be healthy if you don't get your veggies in. The frozen stuff is just as good as the fresh stuff most of the time. Also, try to keep snacking to a healthy level (no cookie jar perks, limited supply of chocolate & crisps in the house, that kind of thing). Lastly, meal portions should be dialled down slightly. Not too much, just a bit less.

3. This is the important one - You have to change as a whole family. Singling one person out for attention is the worst thing you can do. Start today and get the family down the park or better yet, take up an activity you can do together. Doesn't have to be particularly sporty - Archery, Golf - even Croquet will make a difference if you get out there regularly enough.

Its not hard - it just takes a few changes and a bit of trial and error.

I would assume that she has a low metabolism. Theres nothing wrong with that but i would advise you to watch out. Keep any junk food away from her and don't give her any pocket money.

Also a note on dieting, it's not going to be instant, it will take at least 6 months to see a difference. Don't trust these internet scams, they don't work. If, by the age of 15 she doesn't change, the nshe is just obese and you'll need to start a gym plan. If i were you. i'd pay the 30 pounds a month. That is about what i pay for gym. Beleive me its worth it

You do not want your daughter to be teased at her most emotional stage of life. Its terrible. Fat people are prosecuted in my school for no reason. Of course i'm at the otehr end of the scale. I need to gain weight. Perhaps you could mail me with some advice on how your daughter eats.

Good luck and tell your kid i said hi.

You said it costs about "30 Pounds" a month, you must be in the UK. Sorry dont have the "Pound sign" on my computer. (or is there some way to make it)? .... suggestions please.

30 Pounds is equal to just over $110-00 New Zealand Dollars. That's absolutely ridiculous for Gym.

You have to make sure that you get her lunch ready each morning for when she goes to school ... and also make sure that she doesn't take any money with her, because I think she is pigging out at the school tuck-shop or on her way to school or back.

Over here in New Zealand the Government has found that our young children are getting fatter and fatter.

So ..... now the school tuck-shops have been bought up to standard. They do not sell drinks like coke, fanta, lemonade anymore. They sell bottled water. There are no longer any more chippies(fries), lollies or chocolate. They have changed to serving up healthy meals. This also includes school cafeterias which now sell "Healthy Meals".

They interviewed the kids on our television station a couple of months ago. This kids admitted that it took them a few weeks to get into the new food ... .but now they love it. They now know what healthy eating is all about.

How about ringing the school and see what they serve there ... then maybe you can get to talk to other parents about it ....... start a petition for "Healthy Meals".

It's working well over here in New Zealand.

Good luck.

Try the whole household eating just white meat and vegetables like grandma did. And no fizzy drinks. If you are not careful you have taken 20 years off you daughters life if not more.
Don't have a TV in a child's bedroom. When kids came home from school changed and went out they were much more healthy.
You and your family need serious help. May be medical help

My nearly 11 yr old son is 6 stone so I think 9 stone is maybe on the large size. Its all about eating healthy food. I don't buy crisps or biscuits, cos if you haven't got it you can't eat it. My boys have a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner and can have a yoghurt or as much fruit as snacks through out the day. They have pizza once a week and we have puddings on fridays.

im eleven and UNDERweight so i know how she feels.its just as bad to be called to skinny then to be called fat.you should talk to a doctor about her weight. my friend was recently [like today] sent away for bulemia. it messes up your life. tell your daughter that shes fine the way she is. and i bet that her friends wouldnt like her any other way. and she will keep telling herself that she is a big girl no matter what you tell her. try to keep her eating healthy and maybe even start after school activies like sports. thats all i can say. good luck, and i wish you two the best.

Eat healthily as a family, and excercise toghether: not boring gym-type stuff, but going to the park and playing frisbee or something.
Keep it up and you'll notice the difference.
