I know this wasn't on your list, but what about a hedgehog? I have one and they make awesome pets. Here are two great websites:

Rats are always good =) they're very fun to watch and fun to carry around, but they smell bad.
I have a guinea pig, and although I think its one of the best pets, it's all a preference. I know many people who have gotten a guinea pig, but then got bored of it because its not that active, and ended up selling it. They also require a lot of care! we have to change our guinea pig cage every other day.
I also have 2 rabbits, and think those are the best pets. they have the best attitudes and are very entertaining! You can litter train them, and keep them indoors. you will have to change the litter at least once every three days, but if you do, they do not smell at all. You need to exercise them, but that is easily done by bunny proofing a room (removing all wires/hazards) and letting them run around it. You can also get a bunny leash and take your rabbit for walks. After you get the cage. litter box and toys, rabbits do not cost that much.
Hamsters, I would not recommend. My sister worked at a pet shop where they sold hamsters, and they would always advise someone interested in getting a hamster to get a guinea pig, rat, or rabbit instead. I had a hamster a few years back, and I hated it. It bit, it smelled and was just plain mean. although, again, I think this is a personal preference and it depends on what hamster you get.
Hope this helps and good luck on choosing!

rats are smart and can be fun and i heard they hardly bite, Guinea pigs are cute fun and cuddly, rabbits well i don't know but i do know hamsters can be fun and they are soooooooo cute but they do bite not that hard though they are a lot of fun once they get used to you!!!!!!!! So everything you want would be a good pet. What you should do is go to the petstore and hold a rat a guinea pig, a rabbit, and a hamster and see which one is more calm and which one you like best. Remember the hamster will be tired and scared so he or she probably will bite you mine did at the petstore but i still got him!!!!!!
PLZ READ EVERTHING I SAID YOU CAN EMAIL ME IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT HAMSTERS

I had a rabbit once. I can tell you that if you keep it indoors, you'll have a LOT of cleaning to do. The cage needs to be cleaned every day or so, and if you let the rabbit out, you have to really watch it or it can chew on cords and do damage. It didn't work out for me. Luckily, I found a good home for my rabbit. Now, I have a cat and a dog. I've had the cat for about 5 years and the dog for 10. If I were going to get a smaller pet, I'd probably get a guinea pig or a hamster. You still have to clean, but not as much, and they don't chew on everything when you take them out to play. I know people keep rats as pets, but after having seen a few on the streets of Detroit, I don't think I'd want one in my house. Whatever you get, just know that it will need a lot of care and attention, but will give you a lot of enjoyment in return.

I have had all of the above animals mentioned as pets. Rats are docile and very trainable. I had a blue fancy rat for two and a half years and he never bit me. Hamsters are cute, but will bite. The best relationship I have had with any of my rodents has been with my guinea pig. Guinea pigs are so much fun. My guinea pig lived three years, but he was happy. He lived inside a large rodent apartment with no roof, so I could get to him easily. We used to put his apt. on the floor and open his door, so he could go in and out as he pleased. He would run around the living room and hop up like popcorn. They are so much fun to watch. And they also love to cuddle up. Just don't expect them to come to you on command, most rodents do as they please. Read all the books and websites for more information. Rabbits are great too. Get on craigslist.org to see if anyone is giving any pets away.

Which pet can you accommodate? Rabbits (especially) and Guinea pigs need room to run around the house, so if you aren't prepared to pet-proof your house, you shouldn't get either of these. Rats cages should be large if you're housing them properly. Both Rats and Hamsters also need some exercise outside of the cage and you can either supervise them in your room with the door closed, or let them run around in those balls designed for either rat or hamster.
Always think of the pet's needs before you think of anything else.

Everyone has a preference when it comes to pets. My personal preference of the pets you listed is Rats.
They are fairly low maintenance pets however they do need to be fed daily and provided with a large enough cage to run around in. Also they need to be kept in pairs. Either two males two females or one neutered male with a spayed female. You can keep more than just two rats together at a time, the more company the better. They're social creatures just like humans.
Also no matter how many rats you have you should always take an hour or more out of your day to play with them.
They really are great pets, they love to be around their owner.
If you like dogs minus the maintenance then rats are the perfect pet for you. But please do yourself a favor and research them really well before you get them.

rats- are playful and need to be stimulated often...or they can get sick. you need to have time to play with it
guinea pigs- have little attitudes all of thier own. most don't like to be snuggled, but are very entertaining to watch
rabbits- very fun pet to have, most bunny owners let thier rabbits have the run of the house like cats and dogs do, as long as the rebbit's not in danger. most rabbits have sweet and docile personalities, with the possible exception of the dwarf, who has a little attitude. but it's cute.
hamsters- are fun to play with, but thier cage must be kept clean always! you need time to clean out the cage once a week. hamsters should be out of thier cage at least 10 minutes a day.
then there's the pricing: guinea pigs and rabbits can be pretty expensive, between the price of the cage & accessories & animal. rats are a bit cheaper, and hamsters are the cheapest.
just remember, though, that you'll need to spend lots of time with whatever animal you get so it with stay healthy and nice.

Well this is my experience...
My 2 rats ran away from me and hid in their box when I walked into the room. Once I caught them they would bite... and that hurt like hell!! They weren't nice pets at all, apart from they would climb on our shoulders.
My rabbit was LOVELY but the only thing was... I am fond of pets who will sit still and enjoy being picked up. Rabbits don't like sitting still, they like running around. Sometimes when he layed on the floor I would bend down and stroke him and he stamped his foot and ran away. He was one of the friendliest pets I've had though... even though he didn't like cuddles and strokes.
I have never had a hamster but I did look after one once. She was a lovely little thing but far too active for me.. they don't stop moving! She also bit me.. but only once. My sister always had hammies (about 6 in total) before I was born and apparently they ALL died within a few months. They are also nocturnal.
I first got guinea pigs when I was 4. They are by far the best pet I've had. The thing I can't understand is the guinea-haters on here (like the stupid girl above) they certainly DO NOT smell (do you think I'd want 2 in my bedroom if they did??) and they are not noisy because I am a light sleeper and I wouldn't be able to put up with noise if they were noisy!!! If you've never had one please don't judge them for what you THINK they're like! I have had 50 guinea pigs in my life now (I'm 16) and NOT ONCE have I been bitten. Out of these 4 animals types the rabbit and guinea pigs haven't bitten me. Guinea pigs sit for hours on your lap and won't budge (some even fall asleep), they give you kisses (all of mine love licking my arms and face), they make cute noises (they chirp at you when you stroke them), they wheek for food. They are the only animal out of the 4 that makes noises but if you ask me - I don't think that's a bad thing!
Look at this cute guinea pig - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMnMP5Z8c8U
Good luck with what you choose! Go with guinea pig lol!

Hammie. Small, dont smell too bad, easy maintenance, and are usually laid back and friendly. I found mine by the side of the POOL, for God's sake!, and he's awesome. Just clean out the cage every week and attach a wheel to his cage
Guinneas never shut up. I knew someone who breeds the little devils. They aren't even that cute, really. Hamsters are at least small and soft and dont make noise (Well, almost never. Mine sometimes hiccups, but its sooo cuuuuuute!!). Guinneas also smell sumthin' awfull
Rabbits are huge and are way higher maintenance. Smell bad, too.
Rats are cool. I'd recommend I rat, I guess. They're smart, can be taught tricks, etc. But they smell horrible
So, in conclusion, rat or hammie. Go with your personality

it depends on what you like i have had all of them.
Guniea Pig- when i wake up in the morning, before i leave the house and when i go to bed, my g.p likes to be fed a couple pices of lettuce or carrot or 2. they also like going out of there cage and walking around. But beware they chew EVERYTHING! she chewed my flip-flops,sandals,newspapers, ANYTHING!
Rabbits- I have had a rabbit before. You should be careful when handling them because some of them have got a nasty kick. They are quite lovable though and some sit on you lap while others are more independent
Hamster- Some of them bite and some of them don't . Some of them will just sit in your hand and be petted while others will climb around.
I hope this helps!
