Why does'nt the govt offer a modest tax exemption for every household that purchases and plants trees? wouldn't this at least start to take the edge off of global warming? and make communities prettier and cooler?

Your heart is in the right place, but your idea doesn't really work because people that live in cities apartments, condos or rent can't take advantage.

What you can do is make charitable donations to organizations that do plant trees. Donations are tax deduct-able, so at least you can decide where a bit of your tax dollars is going and work to solve the problem that you care about.

That's a great idea, not so much a tax deduction, but a realistic incentive that would encourage some people to impact their communities in a positive way.

There are a variety of reasons why a tax deduction is out of the question... I just wrote like 5 paragraphs, but deleted it because it was really controversial, and i wanted to make the point that despite that i still think it's a good idea.

I do like the overall reasoning, perhaps you should contact the ACLU, they'd be interested in the opportunity, maybe you should make them just plant a tree for the backyard of every household. :-b Whatever you do good luck.//

Do you have to get a cash incentive to do a good thing? Too easy for people to run a scam.

"Plant" a tree by just chunking a cheap sapling into a shallow pit. Repeat until you hit your annual maximum. Who said anything about keeping them alive? This could be done indefinitely. If you were rich you could even employ your gardener in this endeavor. You could plant enough trees over a lifetime to make Johnny Appleseed look like a lazy bum.

Trees only take in less than a quarter of the globe's CO2. If those trees end up dying after only a couple of years or less, then all of that CO2 just decomposes back into the atmosphere.

There would be penelization of those who don't who own land, or those who lives in flats.
Planting a tree and maintaining the tree in proper conditions are two different things. Many would plant a tree only for the tax exemption, not for a green living!

Even better, get rid of the IRS completely and you won't need tax incentives to do the right thing.

I don't know what country you live in, but in the US we have more trees today than we had 200 years ago. It doesn't seem like it sometimes when you see people clear land for houses, but it's true.

I used to worry about wasting paper. I still do, but knowing that for every ream of paper, many new trees are planted made me feel better, even though I still don't waste paper at all.

Now if we could get the newspaper companies to quit wasting paper we'd have something, wouldn't we?

The verse from Ezekiel the word "hunger" could be taken literally or it could mean spiritually. A spiritual hunger. I never heard of anyone beating their wife and kids because they were smoked up. I never heard of anybody dieing from marijuana related illnesses. I never heard of anyone that od-ed from pot. The only reason it's not legal is because the government hasn't figured out a good way to keep people from growing their own and you could be right. The government wouldn't frown on tax-free money too.

Great idea. Lets work out ways to make it happen. Have a look at Permaculture on Youtube.

But for a really quick answer look at youtube link below for intensive backyard gardening. The answer would then be to offer tax incentives for local producers of food. Make it tax free to sell food to your neighbours.

The amount of CO2 one tree takes out of the air wouldn't be worth it.
