If you are going to tell me not to breed... don't reply, I will send your reply in as a complaint!
I am going to breed my female mini dachshund, it took over a year to locate a good stud, she has been tested for everything and has a clean bill of health! My question is about people interested in the puppies. How do we check them out. I would hate to go by word of mouth just to find out that they were bad people.
Now, when I found my little one, the breeder made me sign an agreement that if for any reason I do not want her. They will take her back... does that help in finding safe homes?
Maybe we could run them throuh the PD to see who they are. Or would the AKC web site be best. Just wondering. Thanks for the help!

Well, I have never bred doxies, but I have three. Two were just given to me because they were unwanted and the last one I adopted. I looked at several doggie adoption agencies before finally deciding which one to go through. MANY of them had applications you had to fill out before they would decide whether or not you could adopt one of their dogs. You know, to make sure you were suitable to own and take care of an animal. Some of the questions I saw were:
1. Do you have a fenced in yard or are you willing to fence it in for your pet?
2. Have you ever had a pet pass away? If so how old were they and what were the causes?
3. Do you currently have any animals at home? If so, what kind and breed?
4. Have you ever owned a (insert breed name here) before?
5. What steps are you willing to take to ensure the health of your pet?
6. Do you live in a house, apartment, or trailer?
7. How many children do you have and what are their ages?
You might google some dog rescues on the net. If they have downloadable applications, you could see more question examples there and be able to come up with an application or simply good questions to ask potentional doggie parents. Hope this was help to you! Good Luck!

first let me just say please make sure you check teh back ground of both dogs. the size can go back about 3 generations and if there is big in especially teh male the female may have troble delivering them.
AKC I have seen dogs ( doxis) that are bred from a mine and a standard and then the femal may die if there is a thow back;
As far as how to find a good home I know several breeders that will have an interview. hve tehm come to see teh pups see how they act around both mom and teh pups.
ask where they plan on keeping teh dog, inside or out?
What kind of time do you have to put into the pup?
Are you willing to get teh pup fixed???
How ae you planning how to train??
See how much they know about the breed a good owner would want to know what they are geting before getting this is how they end up in shelters.
Teh problem with having them say they will return the pup if they can t keep what happens when tehy return say and 8 year old dog that hasn't been trained that barks non stop, potties where ever, isn't upto date on shots 9 where I live the only thing required by law is rabies.
Are you ready to take it in it would be very hard to rehome do to age and teh problems ( something I have seen happen)
Or say the dog was hit by car cna't afford vet bills so brings you a dog that needs hundreds of dollars in surgery.
good Luck

Mini dachshunds, I love them. My mother breed them when I was a kid. I have very fond memories of all of our litters. She says she just went by word of mouth because there was no real way of checking who was who then. I presently have a 2 week litter of German Shepherd pups. I have given this great consideration as I too want them to go to good homes. I also am providing a contract that I will take them back for any reason. I have a few people who I know personally who have spoken up and want a few when they are ready to go. There are also a couple who want a pup that are friends of relatives, so I know where your comming from with this. The only thing I have thought to do so far is first I found out where they live and have gone to the local pounds and shelters to find out if they have surrendered an animal or have had one removed for any reason. My local shelters can look back only 2 years. I am also requiring references from their vet. A Few of the shelters gave me this idea as they require such references. I hope this helps and good luck with your pups.

The breeder of my Chihuahua's checked out my vet to see how well I had looked after previous animals. He also gave me a list of questions about Chi's that he expected me to find the answers so as he knew that I had some knowledge of the breed before he would even put me on his waiting list.
We ended up buying 2 pups the first time and then waiting 3 years for a long coat blue/fawn and4 years for a short coat black/white/tan pup. I'm all done now. *LOL*

If you liked the breeders statement she had, then just copy it and change the wording and names to yourselves.
Civilians cannot run names through the PD. You can do online searches of public records, but it costs money.

Well, first off, good job getting the testing done, so few people bother, and then want to breed to the nearest male, and then everyone wonders what happened to the breed.
My recommendation to you is to talk to your breeder (the one you got your ***** from) talk to the stud dog owner, and it never hurts to talk to people in your breed club. ( you are a member, right?) a lot of them have lists of breeders who have signed the code of ethics, and often refer puppy inquiries through them

You need to find a mentor who breeds and shows dachshunds, and you are not going to find one here.
Go to breed shows if you *simply must* breed your dog. Try to take a few moments to volunteer for rescue, as well.
