I own a full time photographer studio. We mainly specailiz in weddings, families, high school seniors and children. We don't really do commercial though we do photograph people for their business cards.

The hardest part of this business is getting new business in the door. Do you have any ideas if you are a photographer and if not, as a consumer what has caught your attention when looking for a photographer.

I will state that I am not the department store kind of photographer. I sell my images and not the paper it is printed on. Once people are in the studio they love what we have, it's just getting the new clients in or marketing to bridal couples that seem to get me.

Any suggestions?

Hi there,

You seem to have gotten quite a few answers that may light that idea bulb of yours.

To add on to the list you could do a roadshow at the local mall and send out invitations to past customers as well as potential customers. You can produce posters selling yourself and business as "the right photographer" for your market category.

Think of digital album too. Showcase your work and compare them with run of the mill products. Have the roadshow before a Photo Op season like weddings, christmas, graduation ect.

Use your skills as a photographer and pick a cause and then support it. Write press release and get some media publicity.

You may even go out of the box a bit an offer a seminar for budding shutterbugs. Remember word of mouth acknowledging you as an expert is better then your own.

Brand yourself and your services as a proven product.

Good luck.

Being a professional, you probably already have displays of your work with various bridal shops? I saw at a local mall one year a prof. photo. displayed his various prints in the mall and boy, were people signing up! Several years ago I was photographing a state wrestling match (for fun) and some of the parents asked me to send them a print. One time I took over 500 pics for a hospital benefit night because they couldn't find a photographer within their budget. But I've also wondered why not send a brochure to different institutions to keep you in mind for functions, even something like retirement parties! I've always thought become one with the public and they will think of you first before hitting the yellow pages. (I just photograph as a hobby). I've even done a couple of small weddings because they couldn't afford the high-priced photographer.
