I don't think it will. Fundamentalism might decrease (though I don't think that'll ever be gone either) but I think religion will continue for the simple reason that people can't comprehend that there is no life after death. And then there's the emotional support that religion provides in an increasingly heartless and spiritless world which more and more people will acquire.

You confuse man-man religion with what religion is in reality. No one can blame you for being upset with the insanity the man-made encrustations have caused. Human interpretations and blind imitations inherited from a distant past differ widely, religious strife and disagreement have arisen among mankind, the light of true religion has been extinguished and the unity of the world of humanity destroyed.

Humanity is completely submerged in imitations and unrealities notwithstanding the truth of divine religion has ever remained the same. Superstitions have obscured the fundamental reality, the world is darkened and the light of religion is not apparent. This darkness is conducive to differences and dissensions; rites and dogmas are many and various; therefore discord has arisen among the religious systems whereas religion is for the unification of mankind.

True religion is the source of love and agreement amongst men, the cause of the development of praiseworthy qualities; but the people are holding to the counterfeit and imitation, negligent of the reality which unifies; so they are bereft and deprived of the radiance of religion. They follow superstitions inherited from their fathers and ancestors. To such an extent has this prevailed that they have taken away the heavenly light of divine truth and sit in the darkness of imitations and imaginations. That which was meant to be conducive to life has become the cause of death; that which should have been an evidence of knowledge is now a proof of ignorance; that which was a factor in the sublimity of human nature has proved to be its degradation.

Therefore the realm of the religionist has gradually narrowed and darkened and the sphere of the materialist has widened and advanced; for the religionist has held to imitation and counterfeit, neglecting and discarding holiness and the sacred reality of religion. When the sun sets it is the time for bats to fly. They come forth because they are creatures of the night. When the lights of religion become darkened the materialists appear. They are the bats of night. The decline of religion is their time of activity; they seek the shadows when the world is darkened and clouds have spread over it.

It's disappearing already. Nobody believes in the power of churches anymore, and everybody knows of all the reasons to mistrust them -- unless they've been living under a rock for the last couple of decades.

Oh, sure, people still pay lip service to "faith" (notice how careful they are never to call it religion -- that has such a bad name nowadays). And those who profit from it, continue to do so. But to maintain their power, they will need to become more cunning and more brutal, and there's always a danger that someone might notice that.

Also, as their desperation grows, they'll make mistakes, which _will_ be noticed. Case in point: The Pope has just come out in favor of returning to the Latin mass. Apparently the Roman Catholic Church isn't irrelevant enough already. This will help. (!)

As for the fear of death -- well, you know, people do eventually grow up.

Unless we can find the answers to everything, religion will be there to help people cope with uncertainty. Also, Christians in general have many more kids than do atheists, so I doubt religion will disappear, at least not in the near future.

Yes, eventually it will. As the body of human knowledge continues to grow, religion will keep being pushed farther and farther to the background. Until, finally, we will have factual answers to enough questions about the nature of the universe and our place in it that we will no longer need myths of the supernatural to explain things.

Religion has been here since the beginning of existence. Even if scientists believed they had proved that a spiritual world is not present. As of yet they haven't.

I myself believe any religion to be corruption. Spiritualism as opposed to Dogma.

We can live in hope that it will, but its doubtful. Until people start thinking for themselves and not listening to deluded or just plain crooked religious leaders, it will remain the bane of our lives.
