Look at your current situation in life and see if something is causing you a lot of stress, anger, or fear. Talk about whatever is going on...write about it, talk to trusted friends, family, or to a counselor. If nothing is going on in your life that you think is causing the problem, and youre not getting good sleep, and it isn't getting better, then see a doctor.

The answer depends upon what definition of dreams you believe in.
Recently, one "expert" claimed that dreams reflect what happened to a person during the previous day. (Not in my case; but, perhaps in YOUR case.)
Some believe that dreams are omens and such; they are sent to guide a person in making life's decisions. (For sure, dreams CAN BE prophetic.)
Some believe that dreams are a connection between this life and after lifes. Hmmm!
Question: Is it the SAME dream? I once had a dream in which my teeth were full of holes. Scary enough in itself: even scarier because it became true.
There are several steps you can take, including altering your sleeping position. (Believe it or not.) Try that.
Also, are you eating just before retiring? Perhaps it is a bit of indigestion or such. If so, change the time of eating, or perhaps change your diet.
Are you watching a "bad" movie just before sleeping?
Did something happend during the day that was upsetting?
Another possibility is breathing problems. Snoring, for instance, usually occurs to back-sleepers. Rolling over onto the side is the best snore prevention yet. If you suffer sleep apnea (often accompanied with snoring), the constant wake/sleep/wake/sleep cycle prevents a good night's rest and can result in upsetting dreams.
Keep a diary: record as much as you can of your dreams/nightmares and see if you can correlate them to your waking life.
Vary your sleeping positions, perhaps even your sleeping times, your diet, etc. and see how that effects your dreamlife.

Try not having anything to drink before you sleep, like tea or soda. If you are religious, pray for good dreams. But the best thing you can do is meditating for about 30 minutes before you go to sleep. This will relax your body completely, don't do it laying down though so you don't fall asleep on yourself. Try not to think before you go to sleep, a restless mind could cause bad dreams too.
