Be extremely cautious with buying a dog online. Most of them are puppymill dogs. There are a few websites that list rescue dogs, but then you adopt from the advertising rescue, not directly through the web.
There's not a single responsible breeder that will sell their dog online. Now, some of them do advertise online, that's a different thing. Some questions you will want to ask are, "Why do you breed dogs? What breeds do you raise? Are all of your dogs registerable? Do you show dogs?" You will also want to go see where they raise their dogs.
Typically, a responsible breeder ACTIVELY shows their dogs. The dog you buy from them will be a pet quality one that isn't quite cut out for the show ring. 99.9% of the time, a responsible breeder requires that you show proof that you neutered/spayed the one you bought from them within a certain amount of time. That's to ensure that you don't breed a dog that shouldn't be bred. If they don't meet those specifications, steer clear. Your puppy may well have been raised in stacked up chicken cages where it got defecated on by dogs above it and were born to mothers that are sickly and generally unhealthy.
The reason that's a problem for you down the road, is that your puppy may end up with all kinds of ailments common to mill dogs. For example, detached retinas, luxating patellas, hip dysplasia, not to mention how much harder they are to housebreak when they've been raised sitting in their own waste.

honestly the best place to find a pup is in local area newspapers b/c the breeders are closer to you and being able to see your new found friend to be is very important.Have you ever seen a price list on transporting a pup through the airports? Not to mention the restrictions and even more importantly the stress it puts on a lil' one.It may seem old fashion to use the newspaper with Google. You can look at the paper on line. Or if youi are breed specific you can contact the AKC for the breed

Don't buy a puppy, save one from your local shelter and it you are looking for a certain breed try a rescue shelter, there are something like 12 million healthy pets put down every year, just because they don't have homes. It is like 2,000 pets every minute in the US.

You could get a mixed breed dog. They are generally healthier than pure bred dogs, and they cost a lot less. Go to your shelter and look around for the perfect dog. Sometimes, it is best to get an adult dog, they take less work and are usually already housebroken. Check out www.petfinder.com you type in your zip code, the breed of dog you want, and the age preference and it gives you tons of choices.

The best thing to do is go to your local shelter. There are a lot of wonderful dogs there that need good homes. I have 2 from a shelter and they are the sweetest dogs you will ever meet.

This is nationwide, but www.puppyfinder.com is a good resource. This site breaks it down by breed, so it's simple to find a particular type of dog. Most breeders will ship a puppy to you on a commercial airliner for a nominal fee. Hope this helps!
