I have tried many things to try and snap out of my funk, especially when it's really bad and I'm starting to get those real bad thoughts. But the more you try and snap out of it, the worse you can feel if you know what I mean?
Now when I'm feeling really terrible, I give myself permission to experience what I'm feeling and try to be more forgiving of myself, because when a person is really depressed it's so easy to be really hard on yourself which can tip you over the edge. And know too that despite how bad you are feeling, it will ease up, but just see your funk as a really bad flu and treat yourself in the same manner, plenty of R&R. It works really well for me, and of course a sympathetic ear helps.

There are all kinds of things you can do to pull yourself out of the blues (like exercise, meditation, diet) but I am assuming this is a real, clinical depression. That is not so easy. I have been getting episodes roughly once a year for about 12 years so, like you, I can feel when an episode is coming. I have tried everything to stop it from coming. At best I might delay it a bit, at worst some of these things actually make it worse, but there is no stopping it. You just need to ready yourself to ride out the storm. What I have found most helpful in coping with an episode is just to do anything I can to keep myself distracted from the fact that I am alive but wish that I was not. Watch movies / TV, read a book, do whatever you are interested in as long as you are able to have any interest at all. When you are really tempted to harm yourself, keep telling yourself that this is just temporary, that if you just give it time, it will get better and you will be glad that you did not.
You definitely need to see a psychiatrist ASAP. Meds and therapy are the things that can help a real depression. They take a bit of time to take effect so be patient with it, but you will feel better.

i just try to let the bad moment pass on its own. I have no one so I have to. I usually feel better after I have a good nights sleep. If I am productive the next day I wont even think about what made me down. For me staying busy prevents bad episodes.

This may sound lame, but it works for me. I work out. Excercise is shown to be one of the best cures for depression. Take out a membership in a Gym, work out every other day, besides, you'll meet some great people too.

I go shopping by myself. I'll just walk around, and look at stuff, i dont have to buy anything, just walking around helps a lot. Try doing anything active, but do it by yourself. You'll be able to gather your thoughts a lot better and deal with them a lot better also.
