ok if I put a barcode every inch on a 6' label and I numbered it (1,2,3 to 72) and they were all the same height...could I make a scanable tape measure??

The bar-code is a label that has a bunch of 1's and zero's. It is no more a measure stick than a mustard bottle or a light bulb.

There is already surveying technology out there which uses a bar coded level rod with a digital bar-code reading level. It is fast and efficient, and eliminated operator error in reading the level rod.

Only if you know the length of the bar code and that that length remains constant from bar code to bar code.

I guess that's what you're asking.
