My mom's Shih Tzu has some serious flea issues, and I heard that fleas don't like the smell of lemon, but we don't have anything lemon scented. We're currently using flea shampoo and powder, but if there's any household items we can use to help, it would be nice to know about it...

I have had success with the suggestions on this site. The lemon and peppermint suggestion work great!

Shih Tzu's are a favorite of mine.. Dawn dish detergent , of course Lemon scented is the best, but any will do the trick. work it in and get it all sudsy, let it set for a few min. You will see dead ones just fall off when you rinse. However, it will dry out your tzu's sensitive skin, so be cautious. Another home "remedy" is to use diluted human shampoo/conditioner. Please dilute it though, unless it's the cheap 99 cent stuff (already diluted). :) Or baby shampoo if you have a youngin' in the house... These will help to keep your pup's skin from being itchy and dry, and fleas will disappear. Remember to wash all the bedding and play toys too. :) Good Luck!

With flea shampoo in the works wait a day or two to let it really take effect.

Disclaimer: take with a grain of salt, I am no vet. and I only know what works with my dogs. :)

There are no home remedies that actually work. Any shampoo or soap will kill a flea. But---!!!!! --- if you don't deal with the fleas in the house and yard, then pup will get re-infested as soon as he dries off from the shampoo. A vacuum cleaner is one of your best weapons. Keep the floor, bed, sofa all sucked free of fleas and eggs and cocoons.

They hate cedar. Get your dog a bed that is full of cedar. It won't take care of all the fleas in the house, but it will help. Also, vaccuum a lot. When you finish, take the bag outside immediately.

The best thing to do is get flea drops. Not the cheap type made by Hartz or Seargants. Something like Advantage, Advantix, etc. Apply once a month.

Try giving your dog some garlic .The garlic will secrete out of your dogs pores and will cause the fleas to not want to go near your dog.

A lotta home remedies do not work. Commercial anti-flea sprays/shampoos/collars work best.

I've never tried it, but I've heard that Avon's Skin So Soft keeps fleas off.

Sorry, but if home remedies worked, we wouldn't have fleas. You need something like Advantage or Frontline--both extremely safe--to kill the fleas.
