What is a good set of dog clippers to trim, not shave a shaggy dog? (labradoodle)?

I tried the $30 set from Petsmart and you can guess what kind of result i ended up with... I hear that the Andis are pretty good but can you attach something to them so they don't shave him all the way down? Any help would be much appreciated!

I am a groomer and the best clipper is actually an Andis Ultra edge or maybe an Oster A5 which is heavier. They both last 15 to 20 years with proper maintinence, but cost between 150 to 200 dollars. If you want to cut your dogs hair and keep it longer, it must be completely combed out without any tangles left.A clean coat that is totally dried then combed out again is easiest to cut. You can buy a #30 or #40 blade and a detatchable comb set to clip on to this blade and then cut the hair. Always clip with the hair not against it. The results won't be perfect as it is a skill that takes time to develope. Good luck with the haircut......if it doesn't work out a professional groomer can always help.

I use Oster and it works great. I own 3 labradoodles myself and also a st. poodle and I groom all of them my self. You can purchase a 2 or 3 in guard for the clippers so that your doodle is not getting a close shave. Do skimp on the clippers though. I spent around $150.00 and haven't regretted it! I use Andis on my dogs and they work well. You can get attachments to adjust hair length. It is better to just spend the money and buy the best (about $150.00 or so) because you will save a lot more not going to a groomer. The clipper will work better and last longer than the cheap ones. Oster is also an excellent brand--we use them at work (vet clinic) and they last forever.
