When someone in America says that they are going to be 10mins or phone back in 10mins does this really mean 10mins or does it mean, 20 or 30.

There are some Americans who say 10 minutes and mean it. Others it means when they get a chance and still others that have absoulty no intention of following through.

Usually when I say 10 i make it 10-20. If someone tells me 10 I give them an hour then either try to call them or forget them depending what it was for ...

I suppose 10mins in America are about an hour because in USA everything is bigger than the rest of the world...

Ha Ha good question!
It means call within the half hour. And "A New York Minute" means you're too late!! The time has passed w/in the blink of an eye.

A week is a long time in politics in the UK. In the US 10 minutes is 8 years.
I can only imagine that there are way too many immigrants in the US. Mañana is spreading. Only joking - but then I'm British!

It's not just the Americans. It's like when someone says. 'Gimme one second', it means give me some time. 10 minutes could mean 5 minutes or not even replying. It's simply , a figure of speech when they don't know how long it will take them to do something .

In some cases 10 minutes means 600 seconds.

In other cases 10 minutes means "in a bit."

It's not just the Americans hun that say 'get back to ya in ten mins....' It's all over..!!

I enquired about a job and they said "I will find out and call you back....."

2 WEEKS!!! I'll say it again 2 WEEKS!!!hehehe before they got back to me...AND then it was for a voluntary position!!!!!!!!!! (end of rant)!!lol

So....think yourself lucky it was the same day let alone 2 WEEKS!hehe or 20-30mins late!!

They probably meant half an hour!!!

10 minutes to some people 20 to others.

It depends on the context and if someone is using it as an expression.
