A Marine is put in charge when you are fighting a ground war. What in the hell is a Navy puke doing in charge? Ain't too many battleships in that sand.

The Marine Corps are a seperate service, but for budgetary reasons are placed administratively under the Navy.
I happen to know that General Pace is a fine upstanding person and that his position (as with the President) is highly dependant on what his staff decides to tell him. At any rate I would not blame him for the condition of the services. Just watch CSPAN and see him getting abused by lawmakers every day (and most of them have no idea what it is to be in the military). He is fighting the war on capitol hill for all of us and getting absolutely no credit. As a matter of fact, he is taking the fall for decisions above his level (Congress).
If that does not cool your jets, it was just announced that the current CNO (ADM Mullen) will be replacing him.

Especially knowing that no other service would support him
even during time of war? I find that hard to believe myself.
The services being as jealous as they are must have felt
anathema at seeing Pace in Chair. Yet I loved his refusal to
resign. He said who would walk away from battle without a
fight while our country is at war? How many soldiers or
Marines could have stomached watching their top military
commander just walk away.
Besides, given all out jurisdiction, this war would have been
over along time ago if given to a Marine commander you
moron.

My understanding is - as noted in other answers, the military pick men with the related experience, knowledge, know how talent and the ability to work with the men they command as part of the team as well as being the team leader! It takes all types to achieve success, in-concert with the highly disciplined / self trained professional NCO's that permeat all the services and are the backbone of its traditions! Not forgetting, these NCO's are also the men who train all the officer corps in the military.
If U wish to sling mud, then again, as also noted, throw it at the interfering, meddling politicians (of all parties) who as armchair critics create almost all the strife the military has to endure.
Some military men go on to make either great presidents or just respected politicians in their own right: How many American politicians have gone on to be great military leaders?

First to be fair, A Marine is certainly capable of leading the military as is a good General of any of the major branches.
But as to the protocol of appointment (CNO part), "you know who" is running out of "yes men".
You see the underground scoop is that many of the top Generals are putting the good the county ahead of Bush politics. This makes his choices slimmer.

The senior Marine is not the only high ranking officer in charge, The whole problem with this situation is that you have to let the officers run the Military and not the BOOBS in Washington and then you will get some real results

Are you saying Marines can't be intelligent and be good soldiers. I spent ten years in the Army and worked with Marines on several occasions. I found them quite professional and definitely capable of leading our military. Different officers get picked for different levels of schools and training and you would have to have access to all that information in order to make this kind of blind statement.

If you mean General Pace, aka: the parrot on Rumsfelds shoulder, it was God. Just ask General Pace....
The scary thing is that there aren't a thousand officers resigning everytime an imbecile is put in charge
