Lots of reasons, my friend!
In my case, the good paying jobs are at least 30 miles away. The pay is good enough to justify the commute. However, the good (safe) housing close to my job is incredibly expensive. So I can't afford to live where I work, but I also can't afford to work where I live.
The other issue is job stability. In my field (technology), like many, it's not uncommon to change jobs every 2 or 3 years. Moving that often would be both costly and disruptive. Therefore, I tried to choose a location to live in that is centrally located to the greatest number of employment centers so I have options when it's time to find a new job.

Well Brak, lots of people live so far from the city where they have the best jobs. Most suburban areas don't have a lot of jobs nearby. So they drive many miles for long periods just to make more money. But at the same time spend more money. Then they drive for nearly an hour just to go home to sleep. It's rare to find a good office job near your home. But most cities and firms are expanding int othe suburbs for that convienince as well as a place with less crime and congestion to better serve the public that lives in suburbs.

Well lets see. I live in a small town (less than 3000) and communting 30 miles to 60 miles is the only way to get a job. I use to commute 30 miles for my last job. I finally got a job in this small town, now I drive 5 minutes. Most jobs in this town are cooks, waitress, small business owners, feed store, mechanics, umm what else, gas station, milk plant or work for the school district, medical center or nursing home. Not much!! We have to commute to have a good paying job. It's hard to find that job close to home. I was lucky I got mine. I saw the ad, sent my resume in and got the job a week to a week and a half later. Only way for some people to make it is to commute to that job!! Plus where I live besides being small it's rural.

well for my case, i live in a little town where the only job is at the gas station, and you can't get a career for that. the best jobs are usually in the city, i used to work an hour and a half away from where i live. i work at a bank now and that's still 25-30 minutes away. it all depends on income and where jobs are. i like where i live, it's quiet and i don't have to deal with the hustle of the city and sirens going off every two seconds. i would rather commute than live closer to where i work.

Okay, but if your home town only has groceries stores, laundry's, and low paying jobs and you have a family and need to have a job that offers medical and dental benefits , or something that you couldn't control threw you into debt, or you were trained for one type of job and the business decided to downsize and close, Then either you'd have to move or travel. We don't always get what we want , and sometimes we have to work hard or drive far to just make ends meet.

If you live near a big city, living in the city is always more expensive. Traveling 30-45 minutes will save you ten's of thousands of dollars and get you much more for your money in a house. Also, there are others who left a job and don't want to uproot their family, so traveling the extra miles is just something they do.

Probably everybody would.
The question many times is housing.
Many people would rather keep their present residence and commute, rather than moving closer to the job.
In this day and age, what happens if the job come to an end???
If you'd like to finds work closer to home, is it because t here IS no work closer to home???.Often, that is the case.

some times you just can't get a job close to home. So you have to take what you can get.. Even if that does mean a major commute to work. In my case for instance I have to take 2 buses to work and it takes me 1 1/2 hrs to get to work and another 1 1/2 hrs to get back home.

Sometimes finding a great, affordable place to live in the same town where your perfect job is can be a very difficult task. Not so much in rural areas, but urban areas are plagued with this situation.
