I've never in my life had such an obnoxious, difficult to get rid of cough. I've had it almost a week and a half. At first I thought it was my allergies acting up, but I've never had them last this long. Any ideas?

See your doctor. A week and a half is not an ordinary cough.

hmm you really didnt give us much to go on? Is it a dry hacking cough, chesty cough or is it that drippy feeling in the back of the throat cough? If you need relief for a dry hacking cough (no mucus) use a cough suppressant. For the chesty cough use an expectorant. For the drippy cough you may need a nasal spray ... but really you've had your cough for a week and a half now so the best thing to do would be to go see your doctor.

If your cough is not accompanied by mucous take antitussive (e.g. codein, etc.) but some needs prescription since it's a kind of opiate or you just buy antitussive cough syrup over the conter medicine. If it's accompanied by mucous don't ever take the antitussive since it's function is to supressed you nervous sytem so that you won't cough. Then, take mucolytic or expectorant.
I can't give you the name of the medicine since I'm not from US.
but do check to doctor first since I can't hear exactly your cough sound.
I suspect it's allergy, it lasts that long because you haven't get rid your allergen yet.
Hope you get well soon ^^. take care! GBU!

Sudufed - the old kind; the stuff you have to ask the pharmacist for. Saline spray. And long, hot showers. Coughing happens because your nasal passages aren't clearing properly.

If its a dry heaving cough, then its not really a cough but some kind of gastrointestinal problem perhaps brought on by drinking or a bad diet. if otherwize, you'll need to do the following.

1. change the filters in your house.
2. clean your bathrooms, kitchen and wipe down all the doorknobs with bleach.
3. make sure you wear something that completetly covers up your entire chest.
4. go to a Dr and make sure you get a antibiotic...nothing else.

If you listen to me, you will get better and soon.

See a doctor. It could be allergy induced asthma.

You could have allergy induced asthma. You should get it checked out. It's very common.
