If height is the issue, then the best thing to do if you have the grit for it is to move inside on your opponent so that he cannot fully extend his arms. The biggest advantage a taller person has is that they are able to reach you while you cannot reach them if they have you at arm's length.

I used to box as an amateur and also got into some unofficial fisticuffs growing up and as a tall guy, I would stick and move so that the shorter opponent couldn't land any decent punches. However, if the shorter person moves inside your reach, it is harder to hit them with power because you can't extend your arms. Of course, if you have experience, you can still land some short hooks or uppercuts that are pretty devastating, but the average guy has little idea of how to actually throw a punch and how to handle a situation once his game plan is ruined.

So if I were a shorter guy, I would move inside, but be aware that if you are not effective, you might be in even worse trouble. Especially if your opponent is not above trying to put you into some kind of hold. What it really comes down to is that if you don't know what you're doing in the first place and if you're not cut out for fighting, anything you do could get you hurt. If you don't already know this, a couple of basics are to keep your chin tucked in; keep your guard up in front of your face, but not too close to your face; and keep moving your head around to make it a harder target. Don't be fooled into dropping your hands and leaving your head exposed if someone lands a couple of body blows. When you use one arm to throw a punch, move your head a little so that it will be harder to be hit now that you don't have both hands covering you anymore. Even if you get tired, keep your hands up. You're dead meat if you can't block.

Never lose the ability of common sense. Bigger people if not using common sense forget that you can hurt them, and become over confident. If fighting a stronger person, use the opposite of force. Ying and Yang teaches that both the internal and external ways have their time of efficiency and both have their time of weakness. The best tip is to learn the differences of the internal arts in comparison to the external, you will better use your time in your choice.

Fight like Mike Tyson, I mean the prime and sane Tyson. Use the peek-a-boo stance with lots of head movement. Bob and weave under your opponent then take him out inside.

most important technique to learn is how to get away from someone you can't beat. that means practice running away. but if you can't avoid a fight, target his weak spots. i can't tell you what does are since i don't want to get into any trouble.
