I'm not sure how that tradition started but it sure makes seeing each other at the alter that much sweeter. It was really worth it. My fiance and I were used to being with each other every minute so it was very hard for us. But it was the greatest thing looking into his smiling face as I walked down the aisle. I suggest you wait, if you can!

In ancient times, marriages were arranged by families and were often nothing more than good business deals. It happened more often than not that the first time the couples saw one another was standing at the altar on their wedding day. To ensure the groom wouldn't have second thoughts at the sight of a bride perhaps less attractive than he's assumed, veils were used to cover the bride's face. The veil was not lifted until the very end of the ceremony, only after the groom had already said, "I do."
This may also be the reason why traditionally the bride and groom are not allowed to see each other the day of the wedding. I used to wonder about the secrecy of the bride and groom not seeing each other and after I got married, I realized that there is some mystery to that special day and you don't want the groom to see you until you are all 'gussied up', looking really nice just for him and for you on that day.

That's what they used to do a long time ago. It's like the groom not seeing the bride in her dress before the ceremony. It's from a long time ago and unless you're superstitious, people break them all the time. My fiance will see me in the dress before the ceremony because we're getting formal pictures taken beforehand. The old reason for that: that was back when the groom had never seen the bride before because the parents chose who you married. They didn't want the groom to run off which is why they waited until the ceremony when he had no choice. It's just a superstitious thing.

You can see each other the day before. That is usually when the rehersal is anyway. It is the day of before the wedding starts. Why? because someone, somewhere a long time ago said it was bad luck.

We can see each other before the day of marriage. In some custom, they don't allow in order to prevent the couple from going over their boundaries crossing their limits before getting married. This happens mostly in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka

How do you have rehearsals and rehearsal dinners if you can't see each other the day before the wedding. I know you are not supposed to see the bride with her dress but the day before may be a stretch.

There isn't a law. My husband & saw each other & even slept with each other the night before. We also rode together to the wedding site & took pictures before the wedding. We didn't jinx anything.

Superstition mostly...in ancient times it was so the bride to be could undergo purifying rituals. Nowadays its more a tradition that most people follow, plus it builds up anticipation for the big day :P

I think it has to do with when marriages were arranged and they didn't want the bride/groom to see each other and split cuz they didn't like what they saw.
Rather outdated practice if you ask me.
