It's not what the word means. It is how it is interpretted by the religious nuts. And all religions have been historically hostile towards any threat to their superstitious nonsense.
Whatever the word means, the people killed are just as dead.

Greater Jihad is the inner struggle, and Lesser Jihad is the struggle against the infidel, no? For some reason, people (terrorists, the media, etc.) like to concentrate on "lesser jihad" more.

Many foreign words and phrases, such as 'Jihad', have meanings which run the risk of being misinterpreted, as their meanings are often difficult to translate...
...and I've little doubt that many media outlets, - in their competition for higher ratings, make these mistakes quite often.
--------------
That said,...
here is a list of a few things that the media made NO mistakes about:
*1992*
Israeli Embassy bombing by "Islamic Jihad" in Buenos Aires, Argentina
*1993*
World Trade Center bombing
*1994*
Bombing of Jewish Center in Buenos Aires
*1995*
Terrorists in Karachi, Pakistan, murder two American consulate employees
*1996*
Khobar Towers bombing
*1997*
Ali Abu Kamal opens fire on tourists at an observation deck atop the Empire State Building
*1998*
Coimbatore bombings by suspected Islamic Jihadi groups
*1999*
Ahmed Ressam is arrested on the United States–Canada; (he confessed to planning to bomb the Los Angeles International Airport as part of the 2000 millennium attack plots)
*2000*
USS Cole bombing
[..and let's not forget...]
***2001***
September 11th attacks
--- 'Jihad' may not have been easy for us to understand before 9/11,...
..but I have no doubts as to what it means now...
Do you?

Yes, the word is vastly misinterpreted. Jihad can be physical or mental, internal or external. However, it is the physical jihad against "infidels" that the media has latched onto.

If it's misunderstood, then why do most insurgents/terrorists refer to themselves and each other as mujahideen and jihadis? They themselves refer to this whole global war that THEY started as their jihad. Take it up with them if they've been misinterpreting what the Quran says, or if the media's been using the same buzzwords that terrorists use in their own propaganda videos.

It actually has to do with the struggle within yourself to follow and obey God's rules and to be a morally good person in life.

Does it matter what name you attach to it? Jihad or not, muslims are blowing themselves up and flying planes into buildings to kill non-muslims (and muslims aswell).

how is it the media's fault? I don't know what it means or where it came from, all I know is that muslims use it to call for a "holy war".
