Beagles are great dogs. But they have their own set of peculiarities. They love to dig,Not particular of how much your manicured lawn cost you..lol They also love to howl at the moon... and sun..rain..cats dogs , to hear themselves etc. They also love to chew and will eat anything, literally. And they can be a touch stubborn. But they are sweet and loving members of the family. They will give you the saddest face imaginable if they know you are unhappy with them, will kiss you and be your best friend, and will be a loving and loyal family member.I've had a couple beagles and I don't recall one ever biting a person. Now, they are a hunting dog, they have terrific little snouts that keep them chasing scents. You will need a good fence and some thing under the ground to keep them inside the fence(see above on digging) they love to take walks but are not the type dog that you'll be able to take the leash off. They do love a good chase!!!! They are smaller with short legs so they typically like shorter walks, more often. Please find an animal rescue to adopt from.. there are so many that are euthanized because of over breeding, Best wishes enjoy your puppy, My dog Chloe and I are rooting for ya!

The first thing you should ask yourself before you get a beagle is, "Have I ever had a dog before?" If you haven't, do not under any circumstances get a beagle. Although they may be cute and cuddly, beagles are high maintanance, over excited throughout their whole lives, and extremely smart. Due to their very sensitive noses, beagles will catch onto scents on walks and pull you away from the trail and are very difficult to keep focused. This curiosity also affects training because they become distracted very easily. A friend took a beagle to puppy kindergarten and the trainer asked, "Did you bring a 2x4? because that's the only to keep them focused is to hit them on the head. Beagles are also smart enough to train their owners without them knowing about it. Soon you'll be feeding him ten treats a day to coax him into handing over the sock you dropped, to get him into his crate for the day, or because he's so cute. I have to admit even though I have cared for two other dogs, this one has outsmarted me. The one thing that will actually tick you and the entire neighborhood off will be the howls. Beagles have been bred to howl nonstop during a hunt so their owners can keep track of them. Because of that, beagles are very vocal and they have the longest bark you will ever hear. Beagles usually become known in the neighborhood as, "that dog that won't shut up!" If you get a beagle, don't expect it to be a free-roaming dog. A beagle's nose will get it lost no matter how smart or trained a beagle is. Beagles aren't all bad though. Beagles are pack dogs so they will love nothing more than a little cuddle time or a rub on the belly. You should expect them to sleep with you too after they're house-trained. If you ever want to settle a beagle down, just pick him up and they will usually just relax or give you a surprise lick in the face.

I have had mine for a little over a year.. previous owners found him as a stray, and did what they could.. but he still needed a bit of training.. In one year he's become close to perfect.. I don't have the problem mentioned by some of the others.. Mine is great on a leash normally.. BUT, I rollerblade or ride a bike... so he gets a good run.. he doesn't really get the opportunity to sniff out a trail.. He was housetrained when I got him, so I can't really say how well he learned.. He's not that much of a howler.. unless he's telling you something.. If it's past food time.. he let's you know.. I've been told that when I leave the house he goes nuts and barks for no reason.. but only for a little while.. My biggest problem with him is that he is an escape artist.. and I've asked other Beagle owners about it only to find out that I am not alone.. My beagle CLIMBS the fence in the yard.. it's a 5 foot fence... so, I'd try to make sure that they are not left alone in a fenced in area too long unsupervised.. The other problem is that he is not that interested in toys.. not even kongs.. he will "bury" anything you give him.. if not outside he will bury it in a pile of clothes or under a pillow.. or even shove it under furniture.. the plus side is that if you hide things and then try to get him to find them he has fun.. (as long as his "person".. i.e: me, is with him).. I think it's a matter of training.. and time.. if I skip a few "walks", I find that he misbehaves on the next one.. be persistant.. training .. training, training.. (I also recommend watching the Dog Whisperer if possible..there are alot of good tips on there.. and if you watch the episodes with beagles or beagle mixes even better)

I've had a beagle for 10 years. He's very sweet, but he was hard to housetrain. Beagles are always nose-to-the-ground, so it looks like they're always sniffing for a place to go! Plus they're pretty stubborn. Now, though, he does his business in one spot in the yard - makes for easy clean up.
Beagles don't exactly bark - they make a sound like ahru. And they do it a lot. They can be trained to bark on command, then to be quiet on command, through positive reinforcement. But they'll still bark if they see something they'd like to chase.
You must have a fenced in, inescapable yard. Once a beagle catches a scent, he will follow it without regard for anything else, and before anyone knows it, including him, he'll be halfway to the next county.
My beagle isn't very active, but he likes to take leisurely walks, sniffing as we go. You have to keep a beagle on a leash, again because of the catching a scent and taking off thing.
Most beagles will overeat if given the chance, so you can't just leave their food out. You have to give them a certain amount at feeding time.
Beagles are generally good-natured, patient with children, and very loyal to their people. They don't require a lot of maintainance - in fact, I can't remember the last time I gave my dog a bath. I wash his face and clean the goop out of the corners of his eyes, wash his feet if he's been out in the rain, and clean his ears once a week (that's very important - keeping their ears clean). He gets a brushing a couple times a week, and that's all he needs.
Many people think beagles are dumb, but that's just not true. Max knows how to open the sliding glass door to the back door, and he sits, heels, and stays. I haven't tried to train him to do anything else. I don't really want a trick dog.
I would recommend a beagle to anyone who wants a small/medium, clean, easy to care for, gentle dog.

with a bit of luck you have not have been given a "pocket" beagle. they're a made of undesirable breeding conduct, that for the duration of easy terms breed for the small length and not for wellbeing. there are 2 top instructions interior the genuine beagle breed, one being between 13-15 inches, and the different being below 13 inches. I extremely have found those "pocket" beagles to be bred with chihuahuas to get the small length, however the beagle shade, so some are actually not even organic bred beagles, yet mutts. did you notice the mothers and fathers, did they fall interior the customary top variety, if so you could base the size of your pup by utilizing what they regarded like, supply or take a inch or 2

Cons: They howl very, very loudly and at anything. They shed. You can't go on a walk without the Beagle pulling your arm out of your socket trying to follow a scent trail.
Pros: They're sweet.

I don't have one, but we were thinking of getting one. We spoke to several people and kept hearing the same things, they are GREAT dogs. But, they like being around their people, and if left alone they can howl (they are part of the hound class). That's why we didn't get one, because we were afraid it would be howling all day while we were at work. We spoke to one couple that had only had beagles, and said they always would. They need active people too.

I had a beagle as a child and so did my husband. They are independent, diggers/escape artists, hard headed, howlers, leash pullers, and mischievous. However, with lots of exercise and good training, there's nothing cuter or more loving! Oh, they're good little squillers and rabbiters. You'll never have a problem with little vermin in your yard.

I have a four year old beagle. I have alwyas had beagles. My beagle has been in so many different classes for training, but has the hardest time being on the leash. She is constantly pulling while following something with her nose. If she is smelling something she has zero attention on me. She is always trying to jump on tables and counters and will steel your food in a heartbeat!
However she is amazing with kids. Babies come over and pull on her ears and she is so submissive. She lets kids do whatever they want. She loves to cuddle and love. She loves being held and played with and is so sweet. If I cry she runs up and licks my tears. She is so precious. She is so dramatic too. I love beagles! I think you should get one! They are a lot of work but worth it! They make a great companion! Good Luck and I hope ny LONG answer helped!

They are really sweet dogs but they need a bunch of exercise like at least 3 times a day. However they howl at night when you let them out. They do have a strong hunting drive so a fenced in yard is a must.
