my sister had to do this last year, and she volunteered from about 7 till 12 during the week all summer at a children's hospital, on the nursery floor. she ended up feeding babies and helping them go to sleep. if you enjoy being around babies, this is a fun volunteering job

There is an agency called NAMI...national alliance for the mentally ill. You could be an advocate for some of the children. You would go to court, speak on their behalf...do activities. Or the YMCA is always taking volunteers. I am not sure where you live, but many cities have youth programs for low income families. These programs could always use help. One more would be a homeless shelter. You could volunteer there to help with anything involving the kids.

I hear that volunteering at a childrens hospital is very rewarding and fun. Or maybe you could read at a library or help out at a local school or youth club? Maybe help at a teenage club or youth hostel.

How about volunteering with foster kids? Usually the Department of Children and Families in your state will be able to hook you up with volunteer opportunities.

You could volunteer to work at your local Boys and Girls Club. Or you could try volunteering for a daycare center or preschool. Another idea would be to volunteer to work at the library during the children's times.

Go to a local homeless shelter. There are so many children in shelters today. More than ever before. They are ashamed that they have to live like this. You can play with them and help them feel safe. Just be a friend. It will change your life.
Please go to a local shelter, you can find one within 2 miles from your home.

You can volunteer at a hospital. . .I racked up over 600 hours working in the hospital. . .you can even join the community service club at your school (most likely it's called Key Club). . .you can find a ton of stuff to do at volunteermatch.org

why not try your local Ronald McDonald House?

They'll always have so much to do, you can bake, clean, office help, make a meal, arts and crafts. You can bring a friend, to help pass some time.

I volunteer at the one in Orange County, CA

what i did for the same reasons as you, was that i went to my local elementary school and asked a few lower grade teachers if they needed any help around the classroom in the summer time , bc i was willing to volunteer in some hours. and surprisingly alot of teachers needed help, i began with assisting 2 kindergarden teachers, one in the morning and one in the afternoon session and soon alot of teachers were asking me if i could cut stuff up for them or come watch their kids for 5 min while they attended something, or help kids with their reading, or test kids, or take them out to recess and stay w/ them ...
just go talk 2 your local elementary school and you will see that there is ALOT of help needed around there hehe .. good luck w/ college !! =]
