They numb the tooth. Use a little wire to make a pocket around the tooth and then shape the tooth so that the crown can fit over it. Once they are happy with their work they will make an impression of the tooth and note the color of the surrounding teeth. Then they place a temporary crown and you come back when the dental lab has made your tooth. They numb it again (I think) and then glue the new tooth onto the stub of the old tooth. The most painful part is paying for it- mine cost $600.00 and I have no dental insurance that covers them!

Most crowns require 2 appointments. There are some dentists that can make their own crowns in their office, but not everyone has the equipment for that. On the first appointment, the dentist will prep the tooth. This includes reducing the tooth down and then taking an impression of that area. A temporary crown is made for you to wear until the permanent crown comes back from the lab...2-3 weeks. If the crown prep and impressions were done correctly, the seat crown appointment usually only takes 30 mins. or less. The first appointment can be an hour or more depending on the speed of the dentist.

well since the tooth is numb you cant really feel it,but first he grinds down the tooth to a size, the size of a baby's tooth. The dentist compares the color of your regular teeth to the color of the crown so they won't look so uneven like there was a fake tooth there. Then after that he will make some kind of paste to hold the crown in place, then he will put the crown on. if it's numb you wont feel it but if it is not numb like it happened to me!! you will feel a bit of pressure and a pinch like feeling in your gums because the dentist is pulling the crown in place to make sure it wont come off. But what you have to do is not chew alot of gum in the area where the crown is being put or anything chewy that will pull the crown off, after the paste dries i doubt it'll happen but just still be careful.after the dentist is done it will look normal, but you wont kinda feel it normal for the first day or so.but then it will feel ok,just don't be afraid and I will give you a lollipop OK? hahaha well i hope i kind of answered your question! ((hugs))

He/she grinds down the existing tooth almost to a point (like a cone), that matches with the inside of the crown. Then he uses special glue (lasts for decades -- very strong) to glue the crown onto your tooth-stub. The tooth root is still there, but the top is new material, that is shaped like your old tooth.
