I have a 3 year old pomeranian, and I must say he is a real menace lately. He goes to the bathroom in the basement when he is alone and barks when he doesn't get to come up. People say that this is because he doesn't like being down there alone and wants to come join the rest of the family. It is a finished basement so it's not like we lock the dog down in a dirty basement. We go down there all the time but when we come up, he barks. Any advice on how to train him to stop barking and peeing everywhere. We've tried letting him up but he still pees on the carpets and goes into the trashcan and rips stuff up. He really is a menace. We want to try everything we can without getting rid of him.

First off you have to understand the dog mentality. They are naturally pack animals. That is why we make them pets. The family unit is a human pack and dogs fit in with us because they flourish in a pack enviroment. If you force the dog into the basement away from the rest of the household, you give the dog anxiety, because it needs to be a part of the pack.Bring the dog upstairs.Give him a crate to stay in,when you are not home or you are not able to watch him.The dog will love you for providing a safe den for it.They love being able to go to their safe spot when tired or crabby.Never put the dog in their pen as you are scolding or they will think it's banishment. Now, when your dog comes out of it's crate ,take him outside and give praise and a treat for using the outside for potty. Also don't leave food down all day. If you do pooch has to poop all day.Limit the food to three times a day,and only give him 5-10 minutes to eat, then pull it up. About 20 minutes later the dog will need to have a stool.Take the dog outside and wait until he's done and praise and give a treat. A bell on your door helps also.Everytime you take the dog outside to potty, shake the bell.Pretty soon the dog wll associate the bell with getting the door opened to go potty, and will ring the bell on its own, letting you know it wants out.The crate that you get for the dog should be just large enough for the dog to stretch out in,but no bigger,The dog poops in the basement because it can do it far away from where he sleeps. But if you crate them in a space just big enough to sleep in they will refuse to dirty it.I think you shouls also try obedience school for your dog. This will allow better socializing with other dogs and people.Make sure the shots are all up to date and that the yrly worming is done. Good luck

I would get him a crate and keep him in it in the basement and start re-housetraining him. If you can, get 2 crates .. one for downstairs and one for upstairs. Bring him upstairs when you are up there and when you cant watch him (making dinner, bathroom break) stick him in the crate so he cant pee on the carpet.

When you get home or come up from downstairs .. bring him with you on a leash. That way you can keep an eye on where he is at all times and he doesnt get left alone down in the basement. It may be a nice basement, but I wouldnt want to be down there all the time.

Next, try to start some obedience classes. This will show him whos boss.

With the trashcan .. buy a sterdy trashcan. My Peke (when he was a pup) got SO mad when we left him in the kitchen when we had to go out that he would knock down the garbage and go through it. So we got this huge wooden garbage can and he cant even knock it down. If you dont want to do that, put the garbage can outside while you leave or while hes upstairs. Thats one problem solved right there.

Hope that helps!

3 years old and not potty trained? Maybe you should give the dog to someone that will train it as you do seem incapable. Why didn't you educate yourself regarding dogs, how to train, how to socialize, and to better understand dog behavior? This poor dog is banished to the basement because of your lack of dog education. Didn't you ever think of puppy classes, or a good obedience school so that you could have a more enjoyable pet and a safer one? It is not to late. I could give you step by step instructions on how to potty train and how to teach the "quiet" command but you really need to start at the beginning, as if you just received this dog.

Never ever listen to anyone that suggests aversion training. Such as hitting the dog, squirting the dog, scaring the dog. You do not ever want your dog to fear you.
