I have a moustache parakeet that came from another home. When I got him the only feathers he had was on his wings and head and a few tail feathers. He had plucked his self. They are coming back in now but they are coming in slow. How long does it take for them to come back in?

I also adopted a bird, a Blue and Gold Macaw...he plucked for a long time afterward. It usually takes about 1-2 weeks for the feathers to grow in completely. If you notice that they aren't growing...that means your bird keeps plucking them. There's not much you can do if it's a trait that they learned from before you had the bird. You never know how badly neglected or abused they were before they came to your home. Just love your bird with or without feathers.

If he plucked himself, you must be doing everything right that his feathers are coming back. So - know that growing feathers is a very stressful activity. Your bird needs extra nutrition such as crumbled hard boiled egg. It may take months for him to look feathered again. Six to ten months.

It is arduous to grow all feathers in at once. A molt is when they shed an old feather as a new one pushes in. What you are describing is ALL his feathers are coming it - now one at a time. Do now worry about or around him,. Just love him and be patient.
