I think they should all be forced into heterosexual unions and encouraged to have seven children they can't afford to feed and clothe, incur massive consumer debt, get a divorce and then get restraining orders against one another. Just like normal, decent Americans.

I know you wrote this as a joke, or at least as irony. But you've actually touched on an important issue. The legal recognition of long-term committed homosexual unions as "marriage" has made it clear that there probably is a difference between civil unions and sacred unions -- and most marriages, even when performed in a church, were really just civil unions from the start.

Marriage *has* been cheapened in our culture because we base our commitments on feeling and convenience rather than conviction and fidelity. You can't cheapen what has already been devalued.

Rich.

Why don't you look around you and see how many divorced people there are. What evidence of commitment is that? If your husband beat you every day would you stay because you vowed "until death do us part"? No you bloody well would not. So the people out there was say marriage is for life, GET REAL. Women of today are more financially stable than of the women of the 70's, 60's, 50's, 40's etc and they no longer have to put up with being treat like unpaid slaves in their households. Women have loads more job opputinities than back then and they do not have to rely on a man for a roof over her head and food in her stomach. I believe that's why divorce is so common because women don't have to put up the s!!t any more. I was commited to my man for 21 years without getting married and may I add he wanted to marry me but he understood I viewed marriage as ownership and he didn't love me any less. Does buying a house in joint names not show the same level of commitment? Apart from the legal side of things marriage is over rated in my opinion.

LOL.... Yeah, just look at Anna Nicole Smith's marriage. Who would dare to ruin the sanctity of that institution?

Maybe we ought to just make everyone live together for ten or twenty years before we give them a marriage license.

Try imagining that it's illegal for you to marry your gf/bf/spouse. That'll make you appreciate your relationship fast!
