Hmm. It's an age-old question and you will get many different responses to it!
Any woman who says looks don't mean a thing is lying. In a long-term relationship, they don't, because you learn to love and respect the person as an individual and a human being. However, in terms of initial attraction they are very important - if you find someone's appearance pleasing, you're more likely to want to get to know more about their personality.
Perhaps your friends' secret lies in other aspects of his appearance? For example, it has been found by evolutionary psychologists that blokes with a particularly symmetrical face, a certain sort of body odour and a particular pattern of body language seem to attract all the girlie's.
Do you know why man first started to laugh? It has been proposed that when the human being (into it's later stages of evolution, becoming homo-erectus - erectus meaning 'upright) started to walk, they fell down a lot, just like a baby starting to walk. It was thought that another human being laughing was a signal that this wasn't so big a deal - it didn't matter, because they could always try again - it was nothing to worry about - it was just one of those funny things. From an evolutionary standpoint, this could make a difference. Having been written into our minds over the course of time, laughter has become a way to reassure someone that there is nothing to worry about - it's not that serious - it'll all be alright in the end. No wonder girls go for blokes with a sense of humour!
Or.... maybe they were all just really desperate and he looked like a dead cert for a shag? :P
Peace out babe, congrats on the engagement!

Generally there has to be something about a guy to be attractive. He doesn't have to have chisel-jaw good looks or be the golden boy like Brad Pitt. A sparkle in the eye is enough - e.g. George Clooney - ugly guy, great eyes. My husband is a bit of a dog and wasn't a looker when I met him but he had lovely eyes and once he mastered the art of actually looking up off the ground and keeping eye contact, I fell in love. So, its the eyes and a bit of a sparkle which suggests naughty and funny and cute all at the same time.

Personality is important but there has to be an initial spark, someone must be attractive in one way or another for you to fancy them whether they are ugly or not., and remember everyone's definition of ugly is different " Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and all that.I would rather be with an ugly bloke who treat me really well than a looker who was a ****.

I went out with a guy like that and the only reason i went out with him is because i liked his personality, if a guy is outgoing it is more likely that a girl will go for them. You see all these gorgeous boys walking around but some of them are the BIGGEST pricks ever, i think that the ugly guys get the girls because they don't waste time obsessing about looks and know how to treat girls properly, hope it helped. xxx.

a guy can be ugly as hell but if he carries himself well and holds his head up in confidence, he would be a hit with the girls (Well some girls- i don't like ugly) confidence for me oozes sex appeal so if ur mate is confident and maybe has a good sense of humour, could be the reason he pulls.

For me a man needs to have a personality. A man can be drop dead gorgeous and have zero personality. Not something I am attracted too. It's what counts on the inside not the outside. :)

If you look good but you're to shy to outwardly show a little confidence then I Pobably wouldn't give you a second glance.
If your slightly unattractive but you're confident and nice then you have a much greater potential to getting my attention.
Looks aren't everything.

It has to be the ability to converse and usually make a girl laugh. Looks do count a lot also, so i expect your friend does not look like Shrek, even though he is spotty!
