lets set the record straight, brakes being shot at 39,000 miles had nothing to do with the quality of the car, that honor blongs to the nut behind the steering wheels heavy foot and poor driving habits, as for the noise after startup, ussually a taurus is either a sticking starter drive or a belt squeel, either way it is relatively cheap and easy to repair.

What do you mean I "think the brakes are about to go bad" ? Are they squealing, pedal going too far down, what. Brakes are as good as the driver. It could be that the driver of it before you got it was a late braker which means haul @$$ and then 100 feet from a stop sign or traffic light hit the brakes and whoa it down. I had a supercharged 5.0 that I whoaed down from over 140 mph many times and never had brake problems and drove that car to work and back 40 miles round trip, you just gotta know how to use brakes and all my cars make a noise when starting up, that is how I know they are running, plus the tachometer. lol

Does it make a quick screeching noise when you start it? If so, you may need to apply belt dressing to the serpentine belt; that's the belt off to the side of the engine driving all the pulleys and stuff. Just spray it on the underside of that belt.
