My spiritual life has developed out of my life experiences and it encompasses different beliefs systems. I have learned and grown spiritually from Buddhist, Hindu, Native American, New Age and also from the teachings of Christ (to me christianity is something all together different). So yes, I have customized my belief system. These concepts and beliefs work for me. I would like to believe that this approach would work for everyone, but I cannot say for sure. What I do know is that religion does not work. It stifles spiritual growth with the individual as well as the community. Whenever there is following of men there is no following of God and no allowing God to lead you on your individual path.

I was raised a Jew then rejected religion in college. Later I explored a variety of other faiths but I didn't find what I was looking for. I never tried doing what you suggest on my own. It always seemed to me the Bahai Faith kind of started out that way, then became dogmatic. I think that would happen with the individual, too. Eventually their spiritual values would harden into some final form and they'd be as dogmatic as anyone.

Actually I might have to say yes, but it is very fundamental. I rejected most of the trappings of organized religion (in my case Lutheran) because it was very narrow in ecumenical content i.e. you had to be Lutheran or go to hell. Of course that was Wisconsin Synod. Other synods have a more liberal leaning. Studied many religions (don't confuse Religion and Sectarianism. Lutheran, Baptist, Catholic etc. are "sects" of Christianity and not separate "religions"). I don't for one minute believe in that narrow concept any longer. When you consider Jesus always referred to himself as a Shepherd, he was right on the mark. People are like sheep. L. Ron Hubbard actually invented a religion "Dyanetics". It's pure crap. Rumor has it that he made a bet that he could create a religion and make a ton of money doing it. He took his skill as a Science Fiction writer and duped millions of dollars out of thousands of people in the process. People followed like sheep and fell in line. Ditto David Koresh and Charlie Manson. Jesus had it nailed, no pun intended! But have I formed my own cult? Not at all. In fact I'm actually attending the church of my youth again. After all these many years of study in other religions, I came right back to where I started. It has changed as far as the chanting and ritual. Is very simple now. The dogma might not have changed, but I have. Now at age 61, after being away for over 35 years, I'm more content to follow the words of Jesus, "Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the middle of them". That is good enough for me because in spite of any other "dogma" the Lutheran church might have, I've come to the conclusion that no man, organization or even choice of a Bible translation, one over another, will get in the way of basic truth. I absorb the truth and let the rest slide as unnecessary to my faith.

No. And the idea of customizing your beliefs and adopting any thing that just sounds good to you, already exist. Any faith in anything beside God, as explained in the bible, is just unfulfiling, and self serving/self centered.

What is the point in making up a faith that you know is not true? How can you have faith in that? Wouldn't it be better to seek the truth instead?

I just go by what makes sense to me. Idiotic dogma and stories about a monster god that could flood the earth is nonsense to me.

It's called Unitarian Universalism...Faith in the self, and however misplaced humanity. One must attempt to find the strength to have faith in one's self before having enough trust to place faith anywhere else. In other words be resposible and accountable for your actions...Live trying not to hurt others that you may/might gain from their pain. PEACE!

People do it all the time. It's called "Cafeteria Christianity." New branches of "wicca" or paganism. Whole new religions all together.
I'm with Fr. K. I'd rather not. I like where I'm at.
