It's generally a sentient superbeing. Past that, it is fairly undefined.

I'm an atheist, so I don't attempt to define it more than that. I leave it up to the religious people to do so. It's their belief, after all.

Since God, by definition, is the creator of the whole universe, he is the creator of time. Therefore He is not limited by the time dimension He created, so has no beginning in time God is the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity (Isaiah 57:15). Therefore He doesn't have a cause.

Why don't we just use the names (the names are descriptive) that He gave Himself?

Elohim :full of strength, power, masterful creativity and divine majesty

I AM : fill in the blank (whatever you need)

Yahweh: self-existing - faithful (He holds everything together)

El Shaddai: God Almighty

El Elyon: Most High God

El Roi: The God Who Sees

El Olam: The Everlasting God

Yahweh-Jireh: The Lord will provide

Yahweh-Rapha: The Lord Who Heals

Yahweh-Tsidkenu: The Lord Our Righteousness

Yahweh-Nissi: The Lord My Banner

Yahweh-Raah: The Lord My Shepherd

Yahweh-Shalom: the Lord My Peace.........

God defines the words used to describe Him: He is Love, Holiness, Power, Strength.................he defines those words.

OK, this is more than twenty words...........but there are many more names of God.
