Check out June or July 2007 issue of Mountain Bike Action. They had an article on custom bike manufacturers and some of the unique materials used. The article may inspire your own cool creation. The bike that really interested me was one made from bamboo and fiberglass resins - joints were beautiful! I am a fly fisherman as well, and have always admired split cane fly rods. May be on file at your local library in the periodicals or your local bike shop may have a copy laying around in the lunch room...

If you mean build it, find a frame and then make a piece selection and make sure everything fits.

Moneywise, you're better buying a complete bike, but if you want to have a bike to your specification, you can build one.

Expect to pay above 1,000 at the least if you go this way.

Just buy the parts. Unless you wanna be really clever and form your own tubing and design your own geometry, just buy a frame, and then purchase whatever components you want for the bike.

Just consider two things.

1) its a LOT cheaper to just buy a bike;
2) if you know as little about it as this question makes it appear you know, then don't do it, buy a pre-build bike, or pay a bike shop to customise a shop model.

heres the bamboo bike the person was talking about.

the only issue about it, is that the frame weighs 4 lbs
my xc mountain bike frame weighs less then that, and probably costs 66% less.
