Good question. There are far more verses than just this one that point to Jesus' Deity. The answer to your question is two-fold:

1) People don't know what the Scripture says. Either they don't want to or have never been told it.

2) People leverage their free will in order to satisfy the lusts of their heart. They don't want to be accountable to anyone so they put their fingers in their ears, pretending that there are no consequences for their actions and choose to obey the prince of this world in order to satisfy those lusts.

In either case we need to live lives that show unbelievers that Jesus Christ is who He says He is and we believe it! There are so many Christians who want to keep one foot in the world, but in doing so, they are dilluting the message of Christ and putting a bad taste in unbelievers mouths.

But let us be light in this dark world and salt for a decaying population. Blessings...

Who is Jesus' God at John 20:17‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’”?

Who is the God and Father of Jesus?

Rev 1:6 and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Who is the Firstborn (eldest or oldest) of all creation?

Col 1:15He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

When did image worship become acceptable?

If you believe Jesus is more than an image of God, then you are being blinded by Satan.

2 Cor 4:4 in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

John wrote his gospel to prove Jesus is the Son of God.

John 20:31but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.

The context of John chapter 20 disagrees with your interpetation.

Your question is correct 'IF' since it isn't calling Jesus God

then it doesn't prove the trinity. Therefore people have every right to not only question the trinity but to discard it as a philosophy of Plato.

Col 2:8.

This passage can have two meanings and argued, therefore it is not the best text to choose in arguing about the Deity of Jesus.

Try: John 1:1 Philippian 2:5-7 and many more that hits to the point.

Its good practice if you're planning on doing Bible studies with someone.

Jesus said blessed are those who have not seen, yet have believed.

John 20

25 So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!"
But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe."

26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" 27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."

28 Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"

29 Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

Lemming, the author of John is biased by the intent to propagandize. Many attempts were made to raise ancient heroes to god status. It just doesn't wash, sorry.
