This is purely out of curiosity, and I don't mean any offense, but if the cross is where Jesus died (according to the Christian belief), then why is it so sacred?
I know some say it's not sacred, and that it's only a reminder, but if so, then why is it believed that it protects from "demons" and so on?

In the Catholic church, the crucifix with Christ still on it is a reminder of how He suffered and died for us. The Protestants use the empty cross to remind us of the Resurrection. The whole deal with demons and vampires and the like is just superstition. A cross is just a physical symbol, and in itself has no power. It does make for good movies, though, when the vampire hisses and backs away from the crucufix that has been thrust in its face.

I think what you're talking about is people using the cross to ward off vampires, or as part of casting out demons in movies. The importance that the catholic church places on statues and images has fed this, i think.
We have a cross hanging in the sanctuary of our church, behind the baptistry. It's a reminder to everyone of the price that was paid at Calvary.

The cross is a symbol of Christian faith. When you see it used as a form of protection, it is a phychologic mechanism - effectively the wearer of the cross is saying "I am a Christian and Jesus protects me".
As far as I know, Christians do not believe that the crosses they wear have any sort of power or special abilities. The cross is not used as an idol either, it is not worshiped or given special treatmeat.

A real Christian don't believe you can hold a cross up to a vampire to destroy it. The cross is only a reminder of what Jesus did for us for our salvation.

Why do married people wear a ring? Is it to prove to other people that they are married: a simple 'marriage card' would do, for legal purposes? Is it to prove to themselves: they were there, they should know.
To see the ring is to see not just what it represents, being married, but all the reasons and experiences that went into helping one decide to make such a decision. Also, to see that ring is to see the one the ring also represents, a half of the circle that has made it whole.
Symbols stand for the thing they represent and they stand for the things beyond that they also represent.

There is nothing sacred about the cross.
Jesus protects us from demons, not a piece of wood.
The cross is to ancient Rome what the electric chair is to the people of the mid 20th century.
Its an execution device.

Superstition.
The cross in and of itself is not sacred. What it represents is a reminder of that sacrifice for all mankind and the triumph over death.
Some people just go a little too far.

The cross is not special, the one who died on it is. Jesus redeemed us on that cross. It took a perfect blood sacrifice to redeem us and He filled the bill.
