When I was young, a man came to my church and gave the statistic that every ten seconds fourteen children die of hunger. Then he snapped his fingers ten times to nail in the point. After the silence of ten seconds he swore quite loudly. It was that word that our society deems as unacceptable that made everyone sit up and gasp, not the fact that children are dying.

I'm sure the fact that I have premarital sex would upset certain Christians more than if I had a bigoted attitude towards a specific race or subculture. My personal actions and what I do with my body don't harm anyone, but bias against people groups breeds intolerance and leads to senseless hate crimes.

Christians, why are we so focused on being self righteous and proper? Why do we get so worked up about people's choices and language that we don't think line up with our faith when they're really quite insubstantial in the big picture? Don't we have bigger fish to fry?

I think it's obvious what I'm trying to say but if you are intellectually unable to grasp such a simple concept that's no reason to be so pompous.

That was an incredible question. Go you. Really though, EVERYONE (not just Christians) should care more about starvation, AIDS, war, crimes and everything else negative in society instead off petty stuff like "bad words." Make love, not war, and do it whenever you feel like it. At least you're spreading something positive instead of bigotry.

It really is a great question, but man and his religion and political views simply say he is not ready to stop hating, man is to busy creating religious quarrels and wars, his self righteous hypocritical Christian attitude continues to grow by telling others that they are wrong and he is right, and that is the focus in many Christian faiths today, I have been a catholic now for many many years, and I have seen a great decline in the Christian attitude it is becoming more negative every day, and I hate to think what the future will hold for Christianity if it continues. May God Bless.

Ohhhhh. The Pride goeth before a fall question. (Grins.)
We need to remember that we are only human and that we always make mistakes.
I'm sorry, but is has been my experience that the self-righteous people are just trying to divert attention from themselves, usually by saying, "Why I've never......."

Most basic Christians are self-righteous and proper because they think this is the way they are supposed to act, and it's understandable, since they see televangelists who scream at the top of their lungs that everybody is a sinner, except those who send in money. (I think.)

I always strive to remind myself that I'm no better than anyone else and that God judges us all the same. Now, that being said, I only get worked up when people tell me that "I'm gay, because God made me that way." or "I can do it, because it feels good."
Usually, after beating my head against the brick, I try to explain to the person that just because it feels good, isn't always a reason to do it. or: God never meant that part of your body to be stuck in that part of his body.
I try not to get worked up, and instead, try to patiently teach why an action is wrong, and what the right action should be.

I don't always suceed. (As the holes in the wall, and my blood pressure sometimes attests too.)

In closing, let me remind you that God wants us to spread the gospel word, treat people like we want them to treat us, and love everyone. He's also said that it *is* our job to try to lead the wayward believer back to Christ, and sometimes to do that, you have to judge them.

Your question is based on an experience you had as a child. You've stereo typed all Christians to be like the people who were in the church of your youth.

You've presented no evidence to suggest that it was a Christian church.

Even if it was, you are not talking about a broad cross section of people just those who attended the same church you did as a child.

50 years ago bad language did not happen in church.

Any type of foul words would have evoked a reaction from people.

Sin does not upset me as much as it upsets God.

The Bible tells me that we have all sinned, some more than others, some less.

I've been in Navy and I'm sure you've heard the phrase, "cuss like a sailor".

Well guess what, cussing no longer makes me flinch.

Knowing you are having pre-marital sex does not made me angry but I know it makes God angry and sad.

Fortunatly for both of us, God sent His only Son, Jesus to die for our sins. Yours and mine.

I've asked Jesus to forgive my sins. Have you asked Jesus to fortive yours?

I'm not a christian, but just wanted to say, what a fantastic question! Well, written and conveyed. I hope you get some good answers.
It'd be great if all of us were more concerned for our fellow living creatures. We're all connected.

We try...or SHOULD try...to speak when God would have us speak and remain silent when He would have us be quite

In speaking, we should tell others about Christ, and if they are interested, they would need to know how to become a Christian. this would involve telling them of thing they are doing that is contrary to what God would have us do.

Being self rightous is a broad term........I think part of what you are calling us as self rightous would be simply our spreading God's word and pointing out obvious sins is not being self rightous....OR judgemental......we shouls also do that with fellow Christians
