Forwarding them just to forward them is rude. I occasionally forward things if I think someone will find them funny or appreciate them. I always write a brief note such as: I thought you would enjoy this, or this one will make you laugh. What I dislike is a mass forward from someone. I've sent forwards to more than one person, but I always go through and decide who I think would like it. So I guess it's not rude if one actually just forwards things he or she knows someone will like.

Stupid warnings about how we are all going to die from the asbestos they put in peperoni and our hair is going to fall out if we don't hang upside down for an hour every week piss me off to no end, and make me think significantly less of the intelligence of the idiot who sends them to me. In that same category are idiots who believe that Bill Gates will send me a $1 million for every 10 people to whom I forward this e-mail.

I also find sentimental stories that are more than 1 - 2 paragraphs in length really irritating. If I don't know the person, and their story has nothing to do with my life, I don't really care to hear about it.

Jokes I enjoy, but I know that not everyone does, so my rule of thumb for forwarding a joke is that I only send jokes to people who send them to me. Just as I don't forward stupid warnings because I don't want stupid warnings, I assume people who don't forward jokes don't want to receive jokes.

I guess my answer to your question is, it depends. Usually they are rude, but occasionally the right joke can be fun.

It is rude to send ANY email (forwarded or otherwise) that contains the email addresses of all recipients. When others give you their e-mail address, it doesn't mean they want it shared with others. When forwarding/sending emails, good manners dictates putting your own e-mail address in the TO: box. Put everyone else's in the BCC box. This keeps email addresses from being randomly circulated ( it's called Netiquette).

You have to know your audience and if the person will appreciate the forward. Some people only have their work email. I would never forward any jokes, etc. to the work email even though these people use it for personal reasons too. My sister doesn't care to read junk emails, so I don't forward to her. I have a friend who forwards everything to me; I don't mind. If I don't care for it, I delete it.

Know you are forwarding to and know that he or she will appreciate it.

It really depends on how many times it's been forwarded. A few times isn't bad, but when the e-mail is shorter then all of the past addresses that's when it's time to copy the e-mail, start a new e-mail with the subject "FW:..." and paste the e-mail.

If it's a stupid chain letter it's rude. If it's a funny joke, then it is ok to send.

A good rule to follow is do not send anything that indicates a reader should "pass it on".

Depends. If it's a good joke or something, then I don't mind. I hate things that are like chain letters. ("Send this to twelve people in the next ten minutes...") I also hate sappy nonsense with pictures of kittens and flowers. (I have one friend who sends me that cr*p all the time. Makes me crazy.)

Depends on the e-mail - I get plenty of good ones and plenty of stupid ones. Some people ONLY send stupid ones, some people ALWYAS send good ones.

Monotonous, dumb, serialized, homogenized, vulgar and obscene. It's the perversion of the original purpose of e-mail.
