Yes. Shelters make big bucks from dogs. Their business in not a labor of love, it is for profit.

Yes, in order to adopt you must pay. Most shelters will have you fill out an application as well, so they can match up the dogs they have to suit your specific needs and your lifestyle.
The adoption fee is used by shelters to offset the costs that they have. Rescuing dogs takes A LOT of money! Not only do they have to actually get the dogs, so they have to pay for gas and transportation, but most dogs need medical treatment, they need to be spayed/neutered, they need vaccinations, ect. Also, the shelter needs to pay for all hteir bills.
The adoption fee can be as little as $60 or $70 or as much as $500 or $600 dollars. Usually puppies are more money, while senior dogs are available at a discounted price.
Hope this helps! Please, if you are looking for a dog, make the right decision and adopt! The rewards will cover the cost many times over, and most breeders are more expensive than shelters.

Every shelter I have ever gone to is a pay shelter. However, you can look for FREE puppies and dogs in your local paper. These pets need loving homes just as much as the ones at the shelter and, if they don't find homes, will probably end up at the shelter. If you get one of these dogs, you save it from ending up at a shelter, which can be traumatic for the dog. (I got a shelter dog once, he was very messed up from being there so long.)
Just remember, there really is no such thing as a free dog. Vet visits, food, dog houses, training cages, toys, and treats all cost money, so really think about whether or not you can afford all that BEFORE you get one. Good luck!!

Of course you have to pay. Do you think that animal shelters are just overflowing with money to take care of this animals? At the shelter I work with the adoption fee is $100, but this includes the fixing of the animal, all shots up to date, and a microchip. Really you are getting the animal for free but paying for the service done by the vet.

Typically you do have to pay an adoption " fee ".
Shelters pay for the shots, neutering, etc. through donations usually.
Paying a nominal fee normally goes right back to the shelter to provide the same services for other animals.
The shelters also have to pay staff, electric, phone, etc.
Lots of people dont know this but their are other expenses that shelters help pay for such as cremation and burial.
Happily pay the fee if you are looking to adopt.
You are helping other needy animals.

at most shelters you have to make a donation to adopt
but it is usually only about $40 or $30 not that much and it will make you have a wonderful dog to play with and take care of
but they need it to feed the dogs and cats at the shelter and for cleaners to clean up their poo and pee
I am really glad you are adopting though, think about all the sad dogs in shelters hoping it's there day to get a real home

Yes, there are usually costs involved. But if youre worried about paying to adopt a pet, you should not get one at all. Animals eat, which costs money, and they get ill, which costs even more money, sometimes A LOT of MONEY. Not to mention the fact that animals, like all living creatures, are not perfect and may have nervous ticks like biting furniture, etc. or relieving themselves inside the house. This is generally not a sign of bad behaviour - its usually that theyre not being provided with proper care or its a health issue. Then there are yearly vaccinations and county mandated licences, etc. So, if youre concerned about costs associated with owning a pet, dont get one. Its not fair to the animal to not provide it with a healthty diet and environment. Costs associated with proper care of a pet is one of the main reasons they end up in the pound to begin with.

Yes, you have to pay. but the money goes towards getting them fixed having them fixed and some shelters put microchips in them now so they dont get lost!! but i think getting a puppy/dog from a shelter is a good idea and the price shouldnt matter

Yes, and while shelters will help you get low-cost vaccinations and spay/neuter, you should budget $1000 a year in expenses. While some owners do not pay this much, it should be budgeted in case the animal needs veterinary care.
