1.The position and hold must be firm enough to support the the weapon
2. The weapon must point naturaly at the target without any undue physical effort.
3.Sight alignment and sight picture must be correct.
4.The shot must be released and followed through without undue disterbance to the position.
Im lucky enough to have been tought them, by a friend of mine whom i shoot with, who happens to in the army, and better still an instructor on the ranges.
Remembering these 4 instruction will improve your shooting, without a doute.

I don't know about the forces but I used to shoot small bore competitions in the prone position. The principles are as the previous answer ,you must be relaxed (this may be difficult in battle) tension causes the rifle to shake. This also applies to breathing. As you breathe the rifle goes up & down ,aiming is done in conjunction with breathing, you should be on target at the bottom of breathing out.Do not hold your breath. The trigger should be sqeezed gently not jerked

Go with answer one. Make it a little more realistic; have somebody blow a whistle and wherever you are at and in whatever position you have to fire; it helps develop dexterity.

breath - oxygen to the muscles and eyes
hold - hold breath as you focus the aim on target, for only a few seconds though!
squeeze / fire - progressive no snatch
hold - dont release the trigger, let the weapon fire, rise and come to rest before releasing
release and breathe - until ready to fire 2 - 5 secs
repeat.
