Inbreeding is when animals are directly related and bred together (brother/sister, father daughter, etc). LIne breeding is more like if there was some breeding between "cousins"

One of my horses in line-bred and he has a lot of desireable qualities for his breed. My other horse -rescued- is inbred (his mom was bred to her dad) and 4 surgeries later, his legs are still not right. Line breeding is definitely better than inbreeding! Inbreeding should never be practiced. Ideally, all breeding would from a different "family tree" all together.

In line breeding, you are breeding animals that are closely related in order to get a specific trait or quality bred into more animals in that line. Sometimes it requires very close breeding, and is something that should be considered carefully. It can cause problems. In-breeding can be used while line breeding, especially when breeding animals such as rabbits. I'm not sure about cats. It depends on what trait you are trying to bring out in the breed, and if that is the only way you feel you can get it. In-breeding is breeding a father or mother back to it's young, or breeding animals of the same parentage to one another. The older the animals are that you are breeding, the riskier this becomes. You must know the make up of your animals well to be really successful with this. I breed rabbits so I'm familiar with these terms, but for on-line definitions I found check out the source I included.

Line breeding, breeding between animals from the same line of heritage is preferred over inbreeding between siblings, parents and grandparents for the same reasons it is not recommended in humans. You can avoid major defects, deformities and personality characteristics by not inbreeding.

inbreeding is breeding animals that are too closely related (Ex.. breeding a female with her "brother," "father" or "uncle". It is NOT a good thing as it creates genetic weaknesses.

If I'm not mistaken, In-breeding is when you mate animals from the same litter...line-breeding is when you mate two of the same type of animal but from different lineages.
